What Influences Do You Hope to See in the Movie?

Lapis Exilis

If I was Queen of the Universe (a job I would be great at, by the way), the new movie would have:

The taut standoff atmosphere, tense character interaction and bold strategies Kirk pulls out in the end of Balance of Terror and The Corbomite Manuever.

The understated growth of Kirk and Spock's friendship and respect for one another of Devil in the Dark, City on the Edge of Forever and Amok Time.

The pacing, action and "aboard ship" sensibility of Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.

The Chekov/ Sulu friendship of the book Prime Directive (which I understand was actually looked at).

The sensibilities of Vulcan of Spock's World (again which I understand was used).

At least a hint or two of the Romulan culture of Diane Duane's Rihannsu books. The sense of the diversity of the Enterprise's crew from these books is great too. As is the characterization of the Big Three.

How about you? What would be your ultimate dream influences?

I'd like to continue the tradition of the endless supply of the expendable red shirt characters. You could always depend on them.

I watched The Final Frontier today because I'm a glutton for punishment, clearly. While they can take most of that movie and toss it, one thing I will say for it is it has some of the best Kirk/Spock/McCoy stuff ever committed to celluloid.

They'd do well to give that a viewing or two, I think.

I hope they listen to the true Trek fans and follow their opinions to the letter. Whatever EVERY SINGLE PERSON this this board thinks Star Trek should be, that's what they should do because it's the fans that make it happen.

Regardless of what you think of the story, I always thought TSFS captured the magic and wonder of the Star Trek universe better than any of the other movies. There was just something incredibly atmospheric about it (think of the sound and feel of the Genesis Planet, or when the Bird of Prey makes it's first appearance). The later movies got away from that, and the TNG ones were positively sterile.

It's that magical, atmospheric quality I would most love to see return to the franchise. And from the looks of the trailer, it seems like we just might be getting that...

Dude, I am desperately trying to get some discussion going that is NOT the same fans-sniping-at-each-other happening in every thread in this forum.

So thanks for being the first to start it here too.

My favourite scene in TSFS is when Kirk is asking his superior if he can revisit the Genesis planet - when he's being told he can't go, the look on his face is wonderful. Kirk's thoughts are already on the backup plan before the conversation has ended, followed by the "I had to try" line. Sublime acting from Shatner. And so very, very Kirk.

That's the sort of influence I'd like to see on the character/acting level. Great writing, great acting.

Yeah, that movie was just chock full of great character moments. Everyone got a chance to shine and it was kind of Shatner's last great performance as Kirk.

I certainly hope we will be experiencing that stately feeling of grandeur, as seen in the original movies (and mainly Search for Spock I believe).
I also want the big music back, think the wonder of Goldsmith's score for The Motion Picture, the rousing action of Horner and the seriousness of Goldenthal. I believe Michael Giacchino can pull it off.
I'd would also like one overarching theme à la Wrath of Khan (getting older, the Kobayashi Maru).

I very much like the nautical feel of Star Trek. Think Nicholas Meyers contributions to the franchise and Diane Carey's novels (Ship of the Line et al).

One thing we probably won't bee seeing again is the sense of camaraderie among the characters ánd the actors that play them.

Having seen the trailer (which I absolutely hated), I don't think we will be getting any of this unfortunately.

I think comraderie will by there. Remember they cast Kirk specifically based on the chemistry he had with Zachary Quinto. The other characters are all played by solid actors that seem to have fun in the roles they've had in the past, so I think there's a solid chance they'll have fun here, which would mean comraderie will come through.

I also second the Master and Commander feel. When I saw that movie it felt just like a Star Trek movie to me. I especially liked the friendship between Captain Aubrey and Dr. Maturin. While they were great friends, their conflict over science versus military objectives echoed Kirk's relationships with Spock, McCoy, and Scotty.

Yeah you're probably right. He had some good moments in TUC too (after he thankfully toned down the hamminess of the previous movie), but still nothing on the level of TSFS.

- The wonderfully strong sense of story we got from TWOK, the feeling that this ride was going somewhere that mattered, and all the elements fed into the central arc.
- The beauty and cinematographic scale of TMP
- The hopefulness and can-do attitude, but more earthy than recent Trek. More like Apollo 13.
- The feeling of real life on a naval vessel, ala Master and Commander and Horatio Hornblower

The spirit of optimism.

And a large bevy of Orion girls :)

I want Kirk and Spock to NOT be "best friends forever" but rather have a relationship that hints at the one in Where No Man Has Gone Before (mutual respect but not complete complicity with each other in terms of point of view--Spock was closer to the "in control" version of mid-TOS than he was to The Cage, but he was still "rough around the edges").

I want the score to be as appropriate to the film as is the one for The Incredibles (same composer, so I expect to be satisfied on this point).

I'd like a bit of the defiance of Paul Newman's character in Cool Hand Luke in Kirk (not to the same intensity and stubbornness--else Kirk would never leave the brig) but a hint of that.

I would like some hint of why Spock eventually feels the level of loyalty to Pike that he displays in The Menagerie. Not wordy exposition or an obvious 'set piece', but just something in the interaction of Pike and Spock that hints at the loyalty and respect.

I'd like the pacing, when there are action scenes, to have the same tautness as John Frankenheimer's Ronin (an underrated film, in my opinion). In fact, if the film's overall pacing matches Ronin, I'd be happy.

I'd also like to see women in "traditionally male" roles (major or minor) where it is "matter of fact", not "look at the gains women have made". Some senior officers (captains and above) would be nice. Trek has a mixed record on this issue so far.

Just some things I'd like to see in terms of tone and influence.

This is geekish of me, but I'd like to see:

*Some acknowledgment/nods to some of the incredibly detailed work done by Trek RPGs. It could be little things, like a character idly noting he's considering the Marines at Starfleet Academy, or an offhand comment about some minor character serving in a system defense force, or something like that. Not purely for fanwank, but to resolve questions.

*Some actual screentime for our blue friends the Andorians. Could be a redshirt or something.

On that note:

I notice that once again, Trek uniforms lack the little things. Like nametags. I know, I know, they'd be hard to see clearly on screen, but still.
