What if Search for Spock were more like Return of the Jedi?

Let me explain what I mean. They needed to undo the ending of TWOK, with Spock dying, since Nimoy was going to come back and be in more Star Trek movies. So they created an entire movie around bringing him back, and tying up some other plot threads from TWOK(Kirk's son, the Genesis planet, etc.)

Yet what if they'd gone a different direction? ESB left off with a character in need of being brought back, too -Han Solo. Yet the entire plot of ROTJ wasn't "the rescue of Han Solo." That was only about the first 35-45 minutes of the film.

What if TSFS had dropped the whole "opposition from Starfleet," "stealing the Enterprise" stuff, and just had Kirk take the ship back to Genesis, pick up Spock, fight the Klingons, and bring Spock to Vulcan?

Actually, you could skip the whole fight with the Klingons and just have The Genesis planet destroy itself because it was unstable or something.

I guess my point is-what if they had done an entirely original plot after bringing Spock back early in the film, instead of taking the entire film just to undo his death? Don't get me wrong, I like TSFS, it's just that I've always felt that they kind of wasted one of only a handful of original crew movies we got with just bringing Spock back to be in future movies. Seems to me they could have brought him back early in the movie and then had something else to deal with.

(it's kind of like fan speculation about TVH before it came out. Many fans thought that a large part of the movie would focus on Kirk and crew facing Courts Martial or the consequences of their actions in TSFS in some big way. It turned out that only took up like fifteen minutes of the movie at the very end, and the very beginning.)

The Trial of James T. Kirk, by Peter David and Gordon Purcell should've been a Star Trek movie! :techman:

The only thing I didn't like about the movie is that we don't get any Spock until the end.

It would have gone like this...

SPOCK (Ghostly): Jim. Jim! You must go to the Genesis system.
KIRK: Genesis system?
SPOCK (Ghostly): There you will learn from Yo-- er, there you will find my body and take it back to Vulcan. (Fades away)
KIRK: Spock! Spock!

That opening rescue of Han is a colossal waste of time. It's 30 minutes of a movie that has nothing to do with the rest of the story. I'm glad Trek III is all about rescuing Mr. Spock.

The rescue of Han Solo was the only interesting thing in Return of the Jedi.

Weren't the Star Wars movies a little serial(y) and episodic?

You know 30 minutes on Hoth, 30 minutes in the asteroid field, 30 minutes on Degobah?

Seems like it was not just a straight narative kind of movie series.

"These small creatures appear to be armed."

"What's the worst they could do?"

:)

Nah, if they just resurrect Spock that easy, it cheapens his sacrifice in the previous movie even more.

:rommie:

It sure was better than any time spent with the merchandis...I mean Ewoks.
Zing!

Never liked Jedi, but Search for Spock was different though. Spock had the whole friendship with Jim that no one wanted to ever end, he was everyones favourite pointy-eared fella and there was a lot more riding on getting him back than Solo. The rebels in SW weren't as part of the one team, or more like 'family' that TOS cast had, it just wouldnt have been the same without him, so Im glad they made it they way they did.

OK, I can see this point. By making the entire next movie be about bringing him back, and by making it difficult, it doesn't cheapen TWOK's ending quite as much.

Don't forget bringing him back was a big deal for Kirk.

Kirk sacrificed his son, his career & the Enterprise to get Spock back.

There are a lot of losses for one that one gain, which shows you what Spock meant to him and how big his sacrifce was in TWOK.

;)

well right, that's what I meant by "making it difficult"-it ended up costing him the Enterprise and the loss of his son.

So, get Spock then go blow up the Death Star? They'd probably have to run that idea past Legal, there might be some issues.
