what if Saavik was vaporized in Star Trek TWOK?

I think the initial idea was that she'd be replacement for Spock much the same as Xon in Phase II. Nimoy foxed them in both cases by agreeing to come back, which was why she sort of faded away as a character after her cameo in IV.

It was a shame because the cast was deplorably low on women by this stage. Main cast aside, I'm astounded by how few women there are among the supporting cast as well. Killing Saavik would have been cool if it had happened later. I think killing her in TWoK, even if just because they knew that Nimoy was to return, would have been a big mistake.

She'd have got in the way of Terrell's phaser shot and gotten vaporized in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

Old time Trek fans correct me if I'm wrong:

Wasn't the thought at the time was that David and Saavik were supposed to survive and kind of take over as a "Next Generation". David was supposed to take over for Spock and Saavik as a friend and possible girlfriend???

Then we'd never have the much more competent and much prettier Robin Curtis take Alley's place. What a travesty to think about.

I always thought Saavik was introduced in Star Trek II to either replace Spock or save the Enterprise. It was basically the former. Valeris was bsically the same in VI, except she turned traitor!

I concur; Robin Curtis is very hot; a Vulcan vixen if you will!!!! And Kirsty Alley doesnt even come close!!!! I'd have her read my mind any day of the week!!! Yeehaw!!! ;-)

IIRC, Nick Meyer wanted Kirstie Alley to reprise her role as Saavik in TUC, and when she turned it down they created the character of Valeris. The role was never offered to Robin Curtis.

More trivia: Meyer wanted Kim Cattrall for Saavik in TWOK. When she was unavailable the role went to Alley.

As for me, I think Cattrall was horribly miscast, but that’s just MHO.
