What If Men Started Wearing Veils

Pick your reason; fashion, religion, culture, or whatever.

How long would this be accepted/tolerated?

Since males commit the majority of crimes, how could this practice be accepted by any society with an eye towards serious law enforcement?

I know the Naked Cowboy up in Times Square makes several hundred a day but, what could I make in my local 7-11's with a gun and a face veil on? Oh wait, and then there are banks...

If 'men', i.e. 49% of the population, wore veils on a regular basis, opposition to the practice would never get off the ground regardless of the merits or demerits of the proposal.

Y'know, same reason alcohol is legal: because everyone drinks it. Other drugs have rather more niche audiences and can thus be safely banned in the 'public interest'.

Alcohol is legal because it's been around for ever. If it was a new product it would be banned faster than you can say 'heart disease'. Or perhaps more accurately 'fucked liver'.

In Tuareg society it is the men that wear veils whereas the women don't. Men start wearing the veil when they are 25 (some sources I read have said 18) and it is believed that the veils wards off evil spirit which is probably why it is often coloured blue - many societies believe that blue protects one from evil spirits.

The men don't even remove their veil in front of family members.

The Tuaregs are Muslims.

Interesting stuff, MC. Thanks.

The men's facial covering originates from the belief that such action wards off evil spirits.

So women aren't important enough to attract the attention of evil spirits? I see this practice for the misogyny that it is! Women should be veiled also; down with patriarchy!

Taking on the veil is associated with the rite of passage to manhood; men begin wearing a veil when they reach maturity.

Well, it makes about as much sense as getting a car or drinking alcohol.

They are truly one of the most uncomfortable pieces of clothing in the summer. Unfortunately, in our society it isn't 'appropriate' for men to wear skirts with our business attire :(

It would make it that much easier to ogle hot women who don't want to be looked over by strange men. Bring on the veils!

It might take quite some time seeing as said men in question would probably get shot/arrested every time they enter a bank or convenience store.

Aren't there already laws about concealing your identity in public? I may be wrong because the only thing I am going on is an old episode of Barney Miller where a normal Joe type guy was arrested because he was a transvestite, but that is what they arrested him for.

I find them very interesting because they are quite different from the stereotypical Muslim. Their society is matriarchal, they don't usually circumcise their girls, a woman can sue for divorce and when she does a woman gets to keep the tent and her husband has to leave (this is because inheritance comes down through the female line).

^That doesn't sound all that different to our divorce system here.

You're just replacing one oppressed group with another.

I suppose the divorced hubby goes back to his mum.

From what I gather the tents are made by the women which is why they get to keep them.

And in a huge number of cases, the house is paid for by the man's salary. That doesn't mean he gets to keep it - instead, he is rendered homeless.

This way isn't any better, it's just different.

Been reading a bit more. It seems that among those Tuareg that are semi-nomadic the men build the adobe mud houses and they get to keep them in a divorce, while the women keep the tents.
