One of my favourite Trek AU ideas is: What If Ambassador K'Ehleyr uncovered the Truth?
K'Ehleyr visits Worf in 2365 aware of the mounting problem of the Duras family corruption. Whilst on board the Enterprise, apart from dealing with Worf and the T'Ong she communicates with The Federation, and access the Khitomer massacre records- effectively putting together the case against Duras. After she leaves K'Ehleyr takes the data to Chancellor K'mpec who gets her to sit on it as it would cause a civil war.
Frustrated, K'Ehleyr is ready to release anyway, but the Honourable Kobry, Klingon Special Ambassador (from the book Strike Zone) contacts her and persuades her to build her case slowly, without tipping off Duras' agents. Together carefully, never using their real ID's, logins etc they slowly uncover more and more of the House of Duras' dirty dealings and Romulan connections.
Kobry also teaches K'Ehleyr his own calm methods of conducting ambassadorial duties, which help K'Ehleyr calm a lot, esp as her pregnancy becomes obvious.
When a Romulan ship appears in late 2366 with the details of who co-operated with the Romulans on board, the Ambassadors are ready and after Worf challenges Duras regarding who's father betrayed the Empire, their evidence is presented. With far, far more records, transcripts, logs, etc than Worf and co could deliver alone, the High Council simply cannot sweep it all away and let Worf take the fall. The House of Duras is discommendated, and it's lands, ships ordered seized. As predicted the Empire falls to civil war, with even the Enterprise seeing some action, however as the Duras' fall is so sudden they don't have all their allies primed, the Romulans ready with aid etc, and quickly they are crushed.
During the fighting Worf discovers K'Ehleyr is with child, and K'mpec's last action before he is assassinated is to witness their vows. K'mpec names Captain Picard as his Arbiter of Succession to ensure a fair contest. Despite Kurn pushing Worf forward he instead allies his House with Gowron ensuring Gowron's ascendancy to the Chancellorship, and the House of Morgh a prominent place on the Council, seats that Kurn and Worf occupy.
Officially, Worf is assigned as Security Commander to the Federation Embassy by Starfleet, leaving his commission intact if he decides to return to ship duty. K'Ehleyr is installed as Federation Ambassador to the Klingon Empire. Together they set about rebuilding a Great House...
