What happened to the Macos after Enterprise?

probably absorbed into Starfleet, either as the Starfleet Marines (if you believe in them), Starfleet Special Ops (like the guys in A Time to Kill/A Time to Heal) or just as Starfleet Security

There are two possibilities:

  • The United Earth Military Command Assault Organization (horrible name, BTW -- if they're basically the United Earth Marine Corps, they should be called the United Earth Marine Corps) continues to exist as a domestic U.E. military branch separate from the Federation Starfleet, in the same way that, say, the Maryland Defense Force or Maryland Army National Guard exist as state military forces separate from the United States Army
  • It was absorbed into the Federation Starfleet upon the Founding of the Federation
We've no canonical answer. MACOs still exist in the Star Trek Online tie-in novel The Needs of the Many, but they've never appeared in the Destiny-verse novels.

One thing I noticed pretty quickly in Enterprise, was the star symbol on the MACOs shoulder is identical to that seen in the Starfleet Delta in Kirk's era. Which brings to mind Kirk's "We're a combined service" from some episode or other.

The aborted movie "Star Trek: The Beginning" featured Starfleet expanding their operations and absorbing the United Earth Stellar Navy (home of Top Gun in Space short-range fighter pilots) in 2159. I'd imagine something similar happened with the MACOs.

In addition to the the aforementioned Star Trek Online novelization having MACOs in the 25th century, the Myriad Universes story A Less Perfect Union features MACOs in the 23rd century, though this is in a timeline where Earth isn't part of the Federation.

I've heard some people suggest that the guys in those black outfits in DS9's ground combat episodes were MACOs, but that doesn't hold up since they had naval ranks and MACOs had army ranks.

I think a novel once made referance to "Starfleet Ground Forces." My guess is they are what the MACOs eventually became.

You know those Starfleet Security guys wearing those leather helmets and body armor in the TOS movies? I think those are what became of the MACOs.

^ I don't agree. Starfleet Security is for providing security officers to serve on board starships. Not ground troops to fight battles. The two are not even close. You can't use one to fulfill the role of the other - it'd be like sending a Wal-Mart security guard to fight in Afghanistan.

I tend to think that the MACOS are eventually absorbed into Starfleet and become the never-mentioned-but-somehow-suspected Starfleet Marines. (And the main reason I suspect that is the correct phrase to use is, of course, COLONEL West. ;) )

AFAIK, weren't most of them Lieutenants? That can be either Navy or Marine...

We know the MACOs were still a seperate organization during the Romulan War.

My guess would be they were absorbed into Starfleet at the same time the Vulcan, Tellarite, and Andorian militaries were absobed into starfleet.

I really wonder, does starfleet has commandos for sensitive operations. If so what is their version of Delta Force or S.A.S.?

They looked at Hazard squad as an oddity, but i am not sure why, every military needs similar units.

Starfleet has Special Ops. Elias Vaughn served with them and they were heavily involved in ops on Tezwa in ATT Kill/Heal

probably their own training facilities so they don't scare all the sciencey types when they blow shit up and kick in doors.

probably at Credenhill, Herefordshire, England ;)

Who do they answer?

The head of Starfleet Intelligence?

Are they assigned under captains and commodores from time to time?

Why did they just dissapear? I mean an in universe explanation. Do they show up in TNG books?

On the other hand, perhaps he wasn't Colonel West. Perhaps he was Cornel West. ;)

Indeed, the TNG novel The Battle of Betazed established that those were standard Starfleet officers, and that those uniforms were called "Surface Operations Blacks" or "SOBs." This was confirmed, IIRC, in A Time to Kill/Heal by David Mack.

Where do they train?

Starfleet Academy or they have their own training camps?

Unestablished.

Who do they answer?

Starfleet Special Operations seems to be a unique division of the Federation Starfleet, co-equal with other divisions such as Starfleet Operations, Starfleet Medical, Starfleet Security, etc. So they probably have their own Director.

The head of Starfleet Intelligence?

I doubt it; why would they? Starfleet Special Operations is a separate division from Starfleet Intelligence.

Are they assigned under captains and commodores from time to time?

A Time to Heal features Special Operations officers operating under the authority of the senior officers of the U.S.S. Enterprise during the occupation of Tezwa in 2379, so, apparently, yes.
