What Gorns mask are available?

In the Trek Locations thread, DeepSpaceWine commented fans should recreate the famous (infamous?) "Arena" fight sequence with someone wearing a good Gorn costume. That got me wondering. I've seen ads for an "over the head" Gorn mask for the last couple of years, but all of them use the same bloody promotional image, but never any candid shots depicting how that mask really appears. One would assume it would need to be considerably thick rubber to maintain its unusual shape, but my gut instinct tells me the mask probably collapses upon itself at the least provocation.

Does anyone have shots or that particular mask, and do any others exist that are hopefully more substantial? I remember seeing one image years ago depicting a mask of really thick rubber (you could tell from the bottom edge that covered the upper collar region, but I suspect that was not a mass market item, but a well crafted "fan" project.

Sincerely,

Bill

I suspect that was either made for the production or borrowed from a pop culture museum. I wonder if that's the suit formerly displayed at the Vegas located "Experience"? Or, are you saying that IS the mask I've seen advertised at places like Entertainment Earth? If so, D@mn, that's nice!

Sincerely,

Bill

No idea. It's a rather skinny guy wearing it. I seem to recall Don Post used to have high-quality ST masks in the early 80s: Gorn, Mugato, Salt Vampire, Spock - and a TMP Klingon and Vulcan master.

In the 90s, there were flimsier knock-offs.

But even the thinner ones can be padded out with nylon fibre to ensure the mask doesn't buckle when being worn. Hot, uncomfortable? Sure. But there's a difference between a mask worn for a photo shoot or a brief scene and the same mask worn all night at a Halloween party.

Here are 3 examples of the latex masks that are/were available from Rubies Costume Company.

Thanks, ItsGreen! That's it, the top one. I've seen that same promo image (sandwiched between the left and center candid shots) in many places, but never the bloody mask itself. Doesn't look too bad! Proportions slighly different from the original Wah Chang sculpt, but it certainly retains the essence of the design.

Sincerely,

Bill

They're definitely available. Simon Pegg wore one of them for a scene in his movie PAUL.
