What elements of Trek XI would you consider BRILLIANT..?

The entire opening sequence with the Kelvin.

Bones' introduction.

The entire sequence where Kirk baits Spock into losing it. the choking seriously was incredibly well done.

The little bit in the Kobiyashi maru where he does the finger bit as the Klingon ship explodes and he's taking a bite from the apple

"I'M GIVIN' IT ALL SHE'S GOT CAP'N!!"

Add my vote for: casting

I already voted for casting Thursday night after the sneak preview; I mentioned they should have an Oscar for casting. Star Trek XI could possibly win an Oscar in that category. But there is no such category, unfortunately.

It was apparent that we had been missing youth and simple sex appeal for a long time; and it was exhilarating to have it back.

Yes, the opening Kelvin sequence...

Have to agree that the casting was amazing. I was really worried that the actors wouldn't be able to pull this off, but they all worked. I don't have a single complaint about any of the actors in this film. They were chosen perfectly and did a great job.

I loved the Kelvin sequence, especially the way they played up the emotion as George Kirk sacrificed himself to save the crew, including his wife and son (who was being born while all of this happened). Very well done.

I liked the little nods to Trek continuity and other easter eggs for the fans. They're all little things that new viewers wouldn't even notice, but long-time fans would appreciate. The sound f/x, the catch phrases and bits of dialogue were really nice.

The humor. This is a big deal, IMO, because Trek doesn't often do humor very well. It's either silly, tacky, juvenile or unsuccessful. I loved the humor in this film. It doesn't detract from the story, it doesn't make you groan or roll your eyes. It's organic and natural and clever, and comes off really well.

I loved:

  • The Casting
  • The Kelvin scene
  • The Vulcan school, and the Vulcan Architecture
  • NuWarp & NuTransporter
  • Space beasties scene
  • The humor bits - I really laughed !!

Wasn't it clever that they showed Zack Q. as Spock, squatting down to be transported to Vulcan for absolutely NO apparent reason but then, toward the end, when Spock is transported back to the Enterprise from the loopy spinny ship he's in a sitting position in the ship but standing when he materializes aboard the Enterprise. What the heck was up with that?

I was thinking about this a bit and decided that since he was landing on an 'earthquake' on Vulcan, he wanted to keep low so he wouldn't immediately fall over. Keeping the center of gravity low, maybe? No explanation for the sitting/standing part though.

Chris Pine's decision to cross his legs the same way Shatner always did in the series. Absolutely loved that. What an eye for detail.

I was watching him in his Tonight show clip, and I notice he sits exactly like that in the guest chair.

Both the Kelvin and Enterprise designs, to name but two brilliant aspects of this film, which in general is resplendent with brilliance...

:bolian: Awesome!!!!!

Atavachron

To merely look cooler for the trailer? I think they used a snip as he was materialising. Maybe he was so emotional about the imminent destruction of his home, that he had to kneel? Whatever, it was ridiculous, and didn't work so well, rationally speaking, but it certainly looked kickass. :p

He transported kneeling because Vulcan was experiencing violent earthquakes and he might have to roll once he materialized.

The most brilliant thing about the movie to me was the casting.

They managed to get everyone right without going for look-a-likes and managed to convey characters without having the actors do impressions.

In answering this question, I take a Gestalt view. The film is brilliantly crafted to appeal to both fans and non-fans of trek; to people of all age groups; to movie critics and lay-people; to fans of CGI effects and fans of simple stories of human courage; to fans of drama and fans of comedy. Basically to everyone who loves movies.

Not that everyone loves this movie. That would be impossible. But this movie comes pretty darn close, and given trek's recent track record, that is a pretty freaking brilliant accomplishment!
