What Do You Think the first FTL starship will look like?

Dayton3

Admiral
Whenever faster than light propulsion is developed, what do you think the first manned FTL starship will look like?

You can suggest whatever kinds of propulsion systems you think might be viable.

Form follows function.

First you gotta make the engines (and the physics behind them) work, then you can build a ship around that.

....otherwise you're just doodling.

Well yes. Space probes to the outer planets use RTGs that generate electrical power through atomic decay for their power source.

But I think he was referring to using nuclear power as the primary propulsion system.

I think any future starship will have to have its crewed section well separated and shielded from the propulsion system because I believe any system that can propel a ship faster than the speed of light will produce substantial amounts of radiation.

I think any future starship capable of FTL travel will have to use antimatter as fuel.

One book I read once speculated that antimatter would be stored well away from the main body of the ship in some form of underslung pods.

Since we have no idea how we'd build a faster than light ship and have no idea what it's energy requirements would be (even "LOTS!" is purely conjecture), figuring out what it might look like is purely an exercise in creativity, not an educated guess.

But I am willing to bet it will look more like the ships shown in Brent's links, utilitarian.

But like I said, it's pure conjecture. The ships might have to be a twenty foot wide sphere that gets sling-shotted across the galaxy with some kind of gate system, or it might have to have a five mile wide engine with a big shielded wedge on the front for a crew compartment. I doubt it will look like a typical sci-fi ship, but even then I could be wrong. It's all 100% conjecture (besides the idea of form following function, at least in the early days of a technology).

And Paxil, you're really not much fun, I'm not sure how you're able to suspend your disbelief long enough to enjoy even a single episode of Star Trek.

IF we ever travel quickly between the stars it will not be in a ship, it will be something like a Stargate.

Meh. Do people who enjoy fantasy have to believe that in the past there were trolls and faries? But to be clear, I think it might eventually be possible to travel vast distances quickly, but I think its more likely to be with something like a wormhole or "stargate" rather than in a fast moving ship.

It'll have Thompson/Unitectic Antigravity generators and deutronium annihilation drive. It will look like this--

If we have FTL travel the first prototype will probably be some kind of small shuttle style craft but an actual FTL ship for travel outside the solar system I think it will look something like this:

or maybe it will be shaped something similar to a vibrator/dildo, who knows.

Without navigational deflectors for the gas, dust and larger objects, a smaller cross section(in the direction of motion) would be better.

It might look like the Messiah, the Orion-based spacecraft built to rendezvous with the comet in Deep Impact.

Of course the Messiah wasn't FTL (or was it?), but any real FTL spacecraft that we build, will probably look similarly cobbled together. We won't have the luxury of style for quite awhile.
