What are you playing in 2009?

Linky.

Personally, I plan to spend the next few months burning through my increasing and depressing backlog of games I bought but have never played or finished. These include several PS2 titles (everything from Atelier Iris 3 to Yakuza 2), some PS3 gunk (Mirror's Edge), and even a couple of Wii titles (Disaster: Day of Crisis and Zak & Wiki).

Off the top of my head I can think of only a handful of purchases for the near future: Persona 4, Tales of Vesperia, and Fat Princess. I'm hoping the latter will turn into my staple multiplayer game for 2009 and hopefully beyond.

I will not be buying Final Fantasy XIII unless Satan catches a cold, because as a fan of Japanese RPGs I find the Final Fantasy franchise to be insufferably dense...I'll stop myself before this turns into a rant. I will be buying Heavy Rain, because if it's only a fraction as good as Fahrenheit it'll still be game of the year. I will also be buying Sonic and the Black Knight, because as a direct followup to the best Sonic game since Sonic 3, it's all but certain to appeal to this jaded Sega fanboy. And no, I won't be buying Wii WagglePlus.

I hope that Sega will announce localisations of Yakuza: Kenzan! and Yakuza 3, though after the complete disinterest the west has shown in the superb Valkyria Chronicles I wouldn't blame them for keeping their more niche titles in the only territory that appreciates something other than space marines blowing things up and shooting monsters.

What say you?

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2: Fusion is a definite buy. I loved the first game.

Then there's Infamous, which is the PS3's attempt at beating Crackdown. WWE Legends of Wrestlemania looks like fun.

Half-Life 2: Episode 3, if it gets a 2009 release, is an automatic purchase. I will probably end up getting Guitar Hero: Metallica.

A couple hundred hours of Gears of War 2 most likely.
And I need to catch up on a few games I didn't grab during the holidays.
Tomb Raider Underworld, Mirrors Edge, Sonic Unleashed.

Games being released this year I'll surely be getting:

Halo Wars
Resident Evil 5
Skate 2
Star Ocean: The Last Hope
Velvet Assassin
Dark Void
Halo 3 ODST(Because it looks to kick Master Chiefs ass)
Final Fantasy XIII(On 360 baby!)

All for Xbox 360, now only $199. Jump In.

And I'm sure this list will double once we hit E3.

Right now, Saints Row 2, which the wife gave me for Xmas. Then I'll grab Mercenaries 2 and Far Cry 2. I'm a cheapskate who waits and gets 'em cheap and second hand.

I'll also be playing through all my 360 collection again, having had to wipe my achievements to swap profiles. I already ran through PGR3 so this leaves:

Assassin's Creed
Call Of Duty 3
Crackdown
Condemned
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
FEAR
Frontlines Fuel of War
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter
Hitman Blood Money
Need For Speed Carbon
Prey
Rainbow 6 Vegas
Saints Row
Splinter Cell Double Agent
Stranglehold

I totally forgot about Star Ocean 4. tri-Ace are one of my favourite studios, but I was underwhelmed by Infinite Undiscovery (though I don't entirely blame them for that) and thought Star Ocean 3 might've been good if it'd learned to shut the fuck up and let me play the fucking game. Nevertheless, their Valkyrie Profile franchise is unbelievably good, and from both a narrative and gameplay perspective I'm very, very interested to see how Valkyrie Profile DS turns out. That's another one to pop onto my list. Somewhere near the top.

Has Lenneth Valkyrie been naughty? Not while I was playing her, she wasn't.

A few games a picked up in the past few month but haven't really had a chance to play yet.

Fallout 3
CoD:WaW
Oblivion
GTA4

What can I say, I'm behind on games.

i finished CoD4 last saturday. i intend to finish Halo 2 by February (chasing the prophet to his phantom).

i may get CoDWAW, but i am definitely getting CoDMW2 in december!

Just a warning, CoD 5 is... well meh. Same graphics engine so it looks
great, but nowhere near aswell put together as CoD4. I think the
modern setting of 4 made it much more visceral.

CoDMW2? Must research...

Looking forward to Alpha Protocol, Mass Effect 2 and Ghostbusters. For the moment I'm going to get stuck into the Fable 2 DLC next week and the Fallout 3 DLC as it arrives.

I didn't know the Fable 2 DLC came out yet. I haven't been payin attention much.

I still have to do another play through so i can do the "evil" achievements and another ending.

Unlike other games, I feel compelled to get all the achievements with Fable 2

I got as many Achievements out of Fable II as I could and traded it in.
It wasn't near as good as I thought, thankfully Fallout 3 made up for it.

And if Mass Effect 2 comes out this year that will rock.

I like Fable 2, stands out as one of the few games of the past couple years that I actually enjoyed playing and kept playing it. Few games are actually "fun" for me anymore.

I was enjoying Mass Effect until towards the end, than just got bored.

To be fair the release date was only announced yesterday or the day before. Comes out on Tuesday, w00t! 800 points well spent methinks.

I'm the same, currently working on finding those blasted gargoyles. I love this game, everything from the setting to the combat system is 98% perfect imho.

I have a few more gargoyles and keys left. Then I'll work on collecting the dolls over LIVE.

And after listening to your podcast, I have a new appreciation for the emotes in the game.

Well I have a small backlog of current games to play since so many came out towards the end of 08. I'm currently playing COD:WOW online (and getting my ass kicked regularily I might add). That will probably keep me entertained for some time to come. Additionally I have Resistance 2 for the PS3 that I really need to play but just can't find the time.

I just recently got back in to the world of Xbox 360 and I picked up Gears of War 2 but I've barely touched it. Again, it's a time thing. I've toyed with getting Fallout 3 but have decided against it in the immediate future.

My problem with Gears 2 is the same as my problem with Gears 1. It's brilliant for the two sittings it takes to finish, thereafter there's absolutely nothing about it that motivates me to keep on playing. Not even the multiplayer which I always thought was substandard and full of fun-leeching exploits.

And with Left4Dead in the fray, the co-op mode just can't compete in my shitty humble opinion onions.

Wouldn't it be a wonderful world if you could seduce a woman by deliberately shitting yourself?

Huh, sounds like me and Halo.

Oh well. *shrugs*

And I couldn't give two shits about co-op.
I like to either play a story or go compete with a team.

I've never played any of the Halo games (sacrilege in some circles, I know) to be honest. I wouldn't mind firing through them just to get up to speed but they never struck me as the OMFG MUST PLAY titles that folks make them out to be.
