What are the best songs of summer?

Norrin Radd

Vice Admiral
There are many songs out there that either mention summer or give you the feeling of summer.

A few of my faves are:

Summertime - DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince: I listen to this song and I feel like driving around town and having a BBQ.

Summer of 69 - Bryan Adams: The ultimate in youth, rebellion, and nostalgia.

The Boys of Summer - Don Henley: Utterly haunting. Reminds me of great summers I can't get back.

Summertime Blues - Eddie Cochran or The Who: Reminds me of the bad parts of summer, but in a humorous way.

Summer Rain - Johnny Rivers: Nice summer love song.

Soul City - Partland Brothers: Great traveling song that brings to mind summer road trips.

Summer in the City - The Lovin' Spoonful: Makes summer sound like an adventure.

I was never a Don Henley fan, and didn't like the kind of radio stations that played his stuff at the time, but damn "Boys of Summer" is a great song.

"Cruel Summer" by Bananarama seemed to be everywhere in the summer of my 14th year. Actually I knew the song from a year or so earlier, when the local "new wave" station had been playing it, but the next year it was in The Karate Kid and went huge.

My all-time favorite, though, is "Hot Fun in the Summertime" by the great Sly and the Family Stone.

A Summer Song, Chad & Jeremy

In The Summertime, Mungo Jerry

Lazy Hazy Crazy Days Of Summer, Nat King Cole

Summer Wind, Frankie

Its Summertime, Summertime (Sum Sum Summertime) by The Jamies

Turn Down Day, The Cyrkle

Tuesday Afternoon - The Moody Blues

Hard to find a Beach Boys or Jan+Dean song that isn't

New York's A Lonely Town (When You're The Only Surfer Boy Around) - Trade Winds

Sea Cruise - Frankie Ford

Santa Catalina (26 Miles) - The Four Preps

Saturday In The Park - Chicago

Definitely agree with these two, especially The Boys of Summer. When I hear it I always think of summers spent at the beach.

Anything from Groove Armada's album "Vertigo" - defined the summer of 1999 for me. :bolian:

Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay - Otis Redding
It Was A Good Day - Ice Cube
Miami - Will Smith
Thong Song - Sisqo
Bye Bye Bye - *NSYNC (you know it conjours up thoughts of summer ;) )
Steal My Sunshine - Len
Cannonball - The Breeders
Every song of Bob Marley's LEGEND

This could go on and on. Katrina and the Waves-Walkin' On Sunshine
Sly and the Family Stone-already mentioned
Good Vibrations-the Beach Boys
Anything by the Chili Peppers or Sublime-that's summer to me, man:cool:

Steal My Sunshine,
Summer In the City,
Musta Got Lost-J. Geils Band(live)
Heard It From A Friend-REO
See Me, Feel Me-the Who(that's summer nights at the Pacific beaches)
The Gin Blossoms-just about anything, I grew up in Az where its always hot and listened to them for years locally, usually sweating with a luke-warm Corona in my hand.

Nearly anything by Fountains of Wayne. They have such a bright sound, it always makes me think of summer.

Seals & Crofts Summer Breeze (or the equally beautiful version by The Isley Brothers)

Boys Of Summer really brings back memories from the summer of '84 :bolian:

That new Kid Rock song does it for me too. The one about listening to Sweet Home Alabama? Y'know?

The Go-Gos and Bananarama both have that summer morning feel to them, Jimmy Buffet pretty much copyrighted the essence of summer, particularly with Margaritaville and Come Monday, and The Eagles distilled sunshine into their music with songs like Peaceful, Easy Feeling, Hotel California, the Long Run, Life In the Fast Lane and Take It Easy.

An album that I consider "summer", well, IMO there is no other that better hits the mark than Brushfire Fairytales from Jack Johnson. If cds could wear out I'd have been on my second or third copy long ago. It doesn't even come out of my truck cd player on the weekends in the summer....

Anything by the Beach Boys, anything by The Thrills. Beyonce's Crazy in Love. Freedom, Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go by Wham. Mr Tambourine Man by the Byrds. Hotel California by The Eagles. Panama, Jump by Van Halen. Dancin' In the Moonlight by Thin Lizzy. Summer Nights by John Travolta and Olivia Newton John.

as you may have guessed, I have broad musical taste. But for my money, Kid Rock's song from last year is the worst summer song ever, worse than Agadoo and all those horrible novelty songs that get popular with UK tourists visiting Spain etc. To think there are people who know that song better than Sweet Home Alabama or Warren Zevon's Werewolves of London, which it copies but doesn't even bother to namecheck. Urgh!

Great songs. Summer Breeze and Diamond Girl for me. Also, any Steely Dan music.
