What are some good parts/elements from "Generations" (ST7)?

Unnamed Caitian

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
I feel it's generally accepted Generations is not the best movie in the series, probably not in the top 5 either.

But there must be something to like in it. I just cannot think of anything right now.

(the only media I have is a DVD somewhere in the housed and I don't have a DVD player. Not it is streaming in any service I have access to. I just have the soundtrack and RLM's yt channel to watch I suppose is too biased)

The music is excellent, it has the D in it which looks great, it has kirk in it, it has some very funny moments, it has klingons as bad guys, the opening credits look great as does generally the movie overall, the special effects are good, better than insurrection, The B looks great, chekov meets guinan, banter between the 3 original stars is good even though it was meant for spock and McCoy

I really like it despite its flaws, its probably 4th in my rewatch list and 1st of the TNG movies

I think the prologue is alright as long as you can get past the fact that the dialogue wasn't written for Scotty and Chekov and accept the whole 'next Tuesday' handwaving.

I think the E-D has never looked better than it looked in this film (though I haven't seen the entirety of PIC yet).

I thought the saucer crash and most of the location shooting looked good.

I want to say something snarky at this point, but I'll try to stay true to the spirit of this thread.

I'm pretty sure I laughed too. And really, given how long these people have known Data, I think I was a little surprised that they didn't see it coming and disappointed that they had no sense of humor about it.

The only bad thing is that Picard's dream life seems to be set in victorian times :D
The ships, the set lighting, the sailing scene, the bottle opening, the stellar cartography scene, the crash landing, seeing the B ever so briefly, were all really nice.

Lots of great moments throughout GEN

Aside from the soundtrack and cinematography being top notch, there is a lot of good that comes to mind:

1. The 23rd century prologue is really nice. The moment between Kirk and Chekov in particular (“No…you were younger”) is very well done.

2. The saucer crash sequence is incredible. I remember being pressed into the back of my theater seat in awe on opening night.

3. Some of the jousting between Soran and Picard is top-notch. I love “time is the fire…” and “I have an appointment with eternity” in particular.

4. The cast really looks amazing in this film. Not sure if it’s lighting, makeup, cinematography, or whatever…but they all look great.

5. I like the horseback sequence between Kirk and Picard.

6. Stellar Cartography is a cool set.

Generations has loads to like about it, I feel it gets too much hate these days.

* The music. Soundtrack is fantastic.
* The Enterprise-D has never looked better.
* Soran was an interesting character. I'm not quite sure they did enough with him in the end to make him truly memorable, but there was certainly something good there, helped by Malcolm McDowall's portrayal.
* It was their 'money shot', and it's aged like everything tends to, but I really liked the stellar cartography scene
* Location shooting - on the sailing ship, Veridian III - used to good effect
* The idea of the Nexus is intriguing, and though if you think too hard parts definitely don't make sense, it was an innovative way to get Kirk into the movie, happily avoiding usual 'time travel' conventions

And I'm sure I could think of more if I had the time.

The two things I don't like most about the film are the destruction of the Enterprise and the death of Robert and Rene, but that's another topic...

I do think MMD did a great job with what he'd been giving, but I wish he'd been given more. The movie could have benefitted immensely from a prologue that showed Soran losing his family, and then later being caught in the Nexus and being reunited with them only to have them ripped away from him once more.

Hell, that could have been a really cool unorthodox opening to a Trek film. Tell the beginning entirely from his viewpoint: the loss of his family, his finding them in the Nexus...and then he's ripped away from them and he and the audience find ourselves aboard the E-B, where our heroes have just ripped this man's happiness away from him.

I also liked the Stellar Cartography sequence for how it really does show rather than just telling the audience what Soran's plan is and what the stakes are.

I think this one is a bit overcriticized. The Nexus concept needed to get fleshed out more to work some things out and if they were going to kill Kirk they needed to come up with a suitably epic way to do it and not just have him fall of a bridge like a Disney villain. But other than that it's pretty solid. Really like McDowell hamming it up as the villain, the Klingon stuff is good, and the TNG cast are fun to watch together as always.

The only bad thing is that Picard's dream life seems to be set in victorian times :D

Unlike Kirk, whose Nexus fantasy should have been him back on the Enterprise with Spock, I can buy Picard deep down wanting to retire and have a quiet life with his books. But they should have had him married to Beverly and not someone we've never seen before.

just have the soundtrack and RLM's yt channel to watch I suppose is too biased
Way too biased.

Generations was my favorite for a brief time. I liked the opening scene, the way Kirk still shows his ability, though the retirement angle again is annoying. But, the rescue scene is genuinely harrowing, and well supported by good acting.

The emotion chip aspect is a bit of a unique take on it, but I think it follows up one some plot points from TNG well enough. The scene on the Observatory is very well done, and suitably atmospheric.

Stellar Cartography is a great set and the conversation between Data and Picard is well done, if a bit hypocritical of Picard, given his leaving the Bridge due to his own "emotional compromise.

Kirk and Picard together is fun enough.

The movie is just let down by a really odd final act and the defeating of the villain is a little too Scooby Doo for my liking.

No, I don't rank it highly but that's owing to less interest in TNG as a whole.

I like the cinematography of the Enterprise-D, particularly the star shining through the windows of 10 Forward. She looked fab on the big screen!

I actually love the updates to the bridge, making it more of a functional command centre with extra stations and more officers on the bridge. It's a pity it was a one off but I understand the nostalgic approach to PCD 3

There are good character moments - Picard with Guinan, Troi, Kirk etc

The new combadges look great on the TNG uniforms. Yes it's a minor detail but it feels different.

The Klingon stuff was well done

I am VERY happy to see Dennis McCarthy's score getting so much appreciation. I fell in love with it opening night. The film had a magical feeling about it: the way it was shot and scored really made this feel like more of an ethereal (i.e spiritual) experience than a purely cinematic one. McCarthy was always extremely talented and he was hamstrung on the TV series. When they finally uleased the Kraken, as it were, he delivered beautifully. After this, bod music was back in Berman Era Star Trek. He quietly slipped his battle music into DS( and nobody objectedso there went the sonic wallpaper.

Sir Patrick's performance is heartbreaking. Shatner is fabulous, especially in the pologue.

EVERYONE in the theater laughed when Data pushed Bev into the water. The TNG crew looked like real sticks in the mud because we all thought it was great. Come on, Riker at least should have laughed (he and Picard didn't even seem to notice).

I can't add much to what the others have already listed, but I love this film and it was a fantastic experience to see opening weekend. Also recall, it opened in the US the week before Thanksgiving. So the holiday vibe in the film was aplified by the time of year. Seriously, if you like Christmas, watch this movie around that time.

As mentioned by many users here, the score by Dennis McCarthy. The film really tries to capture a mood with the way scenes are shot and McCarthy just brings it all home. When they announced that the film's score was getting an expanded release, I jumped for joy! There are so many great pieces in this movie that were sorely missing from the original album.

I also find the visual effects to be top-notch. The 6-foot model of the Enterprise D absolutely shines in the widescreen format. When your last seasons gives you nothing but the 4-foot model to look at, I can see why someone would want a newer ship. But when they took the 6-foot model and filmed it for a movie, you definitely didn't need a new ship.
