What are currently your 2 favorite disaster films and why ?

How much more could you blow up, anyway?
Well, you could blow up the entire planet Earth, though The Knowing did something in that vein.

Why stop there? How about the whole Solar System? The whole galaxy? The whole universe?

Yknow I have never seen The Towering Inferno (read the Mad Magazine parody, tho.) :D Added it to the Netflix queue...

Titanic. I have gripes. All in all, it is a great film, well composed. Just watch the Near my god to thee part.

and Airplane! Absurdely, I find myself worried about the people in the film depsite the film's real goals

1. The Day After Tomorrow. It's so simple and easy to watch. That suspension of disbelief.

2. Once again, Suspension of of Disbelief. Lots of impossible things going on; too many in fact. I saw the movie in a theatre, and will have to rent it some time to see what I missed. It's the the kind of movie that keeps on giving.

I just rewatched The Poseidon Adventure the other day. It was on AMC while I was taking a sick day.

And what struck me about it how it is now not just a fun disaster film, but has become a historical document.

I absolutely love its 70's backgrounds. Look how shabby everything was in the 70's! How abysmal and tawdry looking! And this is supposed to be a luxury cruise liner. If you had a cruise liner or resort that looked like these sets now, you'd be out of business in two days. And look at the horrible clothes. Not just the styles, but the wretchedly low quality of the clothes. Observe how nobody looks like they're taken a shower in a couple of weeks, even before the disaster hits.

It's awesome.

That's not entirely accurate...the Poseidon of the movie is a cruise ship that's done its time and is due to be retired shortly (immediately?) after the cruise depicted in the film. It's a far cry from Titanic or the remake, where the ship is brand-spanking new.

Two favorites, off the top of my head-

1) 2012, because I just watched it and in terms of scope it's hard to beat that. Certainly more epic (and less blatantly American-centric) than ID4, less boring and conveniently improbable than DAT, and we won't even mention the Godzilla remake. Plus, you get the highlight of Poseidon as a freebie. :)

2) Titanic. I'm biased because I was a Titanic buff for 10 years before the movie came out, and the opportunity to see the ship and events surrounding it was just awesome for me. As for the love story...far from the greatest ever told, but it's no Padme and Anakin either, by a long shot.

Just for the record, "When Worlds Collide" COMPLETELY destroyed Earth. Nothing left of Earth after that one but a new asteroid field orbiting the sun.

At least in 2012 there was still an Earth to live on.

Spoofs...
The Big Bus
Airplane and Airplane II

Not spoofs
Earthquake
Meteor

I like the old school stuff where they couldn't afford special effects, so they had to pay for scriptwriters and actors for a decent (if cliched) story and characters. Don't like CGI...

1) The Day After Tomorrow - I don't know why, it's just an enjoyable flick (but also seems to be the movie where afterward Dennis Quaid started starring in shitty movies) The disaster effects are cool and the rising sea in New York City and subsequent ice hurricane are chilling to watch (pun intended :p )

2) Knowing - Usually I don't care for Nicolas Cage as he usually plays the same psycho running around screaming like a madman for two hours and the same is true for Knowing, but the plane disaster, subway disaster and subsequent vaporization of Earth are some of the most horrific scenes in a movie. And I also love for once, the hero is completely powerless to stop them. The only thing I could have done without were the Alien/Angel spaceships. Otherwise a creepy movie.

I'd accept this criticism if everything I said about The Poseidon Adventure wasn't also true in spades of a film like Earthquake, too.
