What about the "Magic Box"

An episode in one of the earlier seasons Ben said that Island has a magic box on it, a box that will provide you with anything you want.

Is that bullshit now? I mean are they ever going to explain that or was it just a ruse? Kind of like the smoke monster roaring and making mechanical sounds?

"The Magic Box" is a metaphor, and likely feeds into the themes of destiny and fate that we're not going to get closure on until it's all over.

But it did provide the "owner" with whatever they needed. Ben needed a spinal surgeon...Boom! Jack crashes on the Island. Locke needed closure with his Dad...Boom, Kevin Tighe shows up underground!

There were a few more instances like that, but I forget them now. I understand the metaphoric aspect of the box, but it did physically manifest those things.

Sort of. Ben got his spinal surgeon because Desmond crashed the plane. Locke's dad showed up because the Others kidnapped him. Is all this stuff just happening because our characters are randomly doing stuff or is it the wishes of the Island made manifest through them? The Magic Box is sort of that concept given form in dialogue.

Wouldn't count on an answer until the finale, and I wouldn't even begin to know how to intelligently speculate on how it all fits together.

Ben actually said a few episodes later "that was just a metaphor." I think it was The Brig.
