What about "Conundrum"

Captain
Captain
In the TNG ep Conundrum it would have made much more sense for the Satarran operative (McDuff) to have made himself Captain, that way he could have ordered the Enterprise-D to attack the Lysian Central Command. By using the Bio-Electric field he could have convinsed the Ent Crew that he was the Capt, they would have probably followed his command to destroy the Lysians, and thoughts???

It sure would have, but it also would have made a lot more sense for them to use the damn memory wipe superweapon on their enemies in the first place. It's all very hard to rationalize. There must have been very few Satarrans left, or the rest were distant or pinned down; otherwise it's hard to imagine they'd choose to stage it this way. Maybe some conditions existed which required the attack come from a third party to achieve surprise, or even better, deniability afterward.

Anyhow, I can only imagine they were able to monkey with the computers, but not beyond the level of Picard's command codes, so they could not remove him as the captain but they could change everything secured below his level of authority. Best I can do.

You do have a point here.

But maybe that Bio-Electric field wasn't that sofisticated and there would have been the risk that Picard and the other had committed mutiny at the last moment.

Anyway, this is a great episode, one of my favorites and MacDuff was an interesting villain who could have been used for some other epsiodes as well.

Maybe they were trying to keep from being too obvious.

Or maybe they couldn't develop a weapon that worked on the physiology of the Lysians... or the Lysians specifically had developed a defence against it out of necessity.

I always attributed it to he could more easily be the Executive Officer than the Commanding Officer. The XO has to know a lot, but the Commanding Officer has to know practically everything about the ship. Their procedural memories of how to do their jobs were still there, just their personal memories of who they were weren't.

His plan makes sense tome if he was trying to maintain a low profile aboard. Executive officer is close enough to the top to influence the Captain along without having to be in forefront. Also, he couldn't be completely sure that the crew wouldnt have some memory of Picard as an authority figure. It's easier to move Riker to one side than to knock Picard aside.

There is also another small point. It may have been difficult for MacDuff to remove the physical rank pips on Picard's collar without waking him up. Inserting himself between Picard and Riker in the chain of command is easier.

Quite - Picard remained Captain because his knowledge was that of the Captain, they needed him in order to ensure success. They could not have predicted worf's rather OTT assumption of command, funny as it was!
