Were the Enterprise's shields up when arriving at Vulcan?

Yup - the differences vs. the ST:TMP ships were fairly minimal, with "winglets" in the control tower, "ribs" in the neck and a bit of extra sweep to various parts, and of course lots of very visible guns. But it's possible the ships were intended to be much bigger than their counterparts from the other movies. After all, they were supposed to be a threat to the much bigger Starfleet vessels of this movie.

Shields practically did not matter.

The Narada had such a huge technological advantage.

Thus making Uhura the most useless character in the whole movie.

Hmm...seems like they adapted her character flawlessly!
