Wendy and Marvin

For my son, (and me I admit) I have been downloading these old Superfriends episodes via the DC COMICS network on Xbox360...These old Superfriends, before the wonder twins and challege of the superfriends, have some really whacko plots. They are aimed at kids, but are fun to watch.

The plot to the one we just watched? Let me see if I can get this straight. Dr. Gulliver (interesting name considering the plot) tried to get scientist to go along with his idea of shrinking everything so the effects on the earth could be not as great...the didn't listen to him. So he ends up shrinking everyone one at Nasa and..well...it goes on from there.

If you have 360, they cost about 100 or 120pts...not bad...and good fun

Why won't they release those on DVD? I imagine a lot of folks would buy them the good ole fashioned way too.

I remember those old episodes and loved them. If I recall correctly most had very strong environmental themes.

I always quite liked the first season (though my favorite was Challenge Of The Superfriends). Yeah, they were goofy, and with the strong environmental theme very much a product of their times. But they were fun.

Marvin, Wendy, and Wonder Dog were far less irritating than the Wonder Twins and Gleek. I guess WD was Hanna-Barbera's way of putting their own stamp on the proceedings; they were constitutionally incapable of producing a cartoon that didn't have at least one semi-anthropomorphized animal--preferably a dog.

Best of all, though, was the theme music. None of the later incarnations ever matched the original theme, which was a fascinating combination of superheroic grandeur, a funky-ass 70s bassline, and the inimitable tones of Ted Knight...

"In the great hall of the Justice League, there are assembled the world's four greatest heroes, created from the cosmic legends of the universe!"

Beautiful.

Jeez, I never put 2 + 2 together. That WAS Ted Knight, doing his 'drama voice'. :D

The episode RS describes, IIRC, also featured the first animated appearance of Green Arrow, possibly his first appearance outside comics altogether, though Speedy appeared in the old Filmation Titans years before.

As to Ted Knight, I always pictured this scene :

(We see Ted doing the intro into a mike )

"In the great hall of the Justice League, there are assembled the world's four greatest heroes, created from the cosmic legends of the universe!"

( In walks Ed Asner )

Lou Grant : Ted, what the hell are you doing?

Ted : Just a little voice work on the side, Lou. You said I could.

Lou : Not in the middle of the news broadcast, I didn't!

Ted : But, Lou, we're on commercial break.

Lou : That ended, Ted, just as you stepped up to that mike. We're on the air, now.

(Ted looks flustered, runs over to the news desk )

Ted : uhhh..steel prices took a dive today, as the scandal...over to you, Gordy.

(In the office area, watching the fiasco)

Murray : I wish Ted were Clark Kent.

Mary : Why?

Murray : Cause that way, we'd always be wondering why he's never around.

Nah, I far prefer the later, peppier version:

"Gathered together, from the cosmic REACHES of the universe, here in this GREAT Hall of Justice, are the most powerful forces for good EVER ASSEMBLED!!!"

Man, I really loved that narrarator guy. :D

That is a good idea, everyone in the world could all live in kansas and the effect on the earth would minimised, plus if we can send probes to mars we could send a group of minuature folks to mars as kitchhikers in a robotic probe.

Why did they stop this guy?

My son asked me the same question. We had just passed by CNN where they had a story about the world running out of fertile land. Heck, could you imagine shrinking all of our cattle down to the size of ants? Would sure be a lot less Methane gas in the world..

Yeah, but there's a downside. I mean, producing even one double cheeseburger would necessitate a virtual cattle genocide.

Who should play Wendy and Marvin when they make a Justice League movie?

DJ Qualls comes to mind as Marvin.

IT WAS!! I just started seeing reruns of MTM and you nailed it..I just saw the pilot where Mary first arrives and gets that job...that show was great..I saw the segment about it on Biography last weekend and all the battles they went through just to get the show on...GR wasn't alone with those kinds of stories, is he?...thanks for INFO about Green Arrow..I didn't know that was his first appearence in animated form

Rob

Ted Voice : Thanks, Guys!

I've always been a fan of MTM. If I'm not mistaken (gotta hit IMDB) Ted Knight also did the voice of the Joker in the late 70's Filmation Batman. In fact, geeking out again, I think that series and 'Challenge OTSF' was the first example of the 'bat-embrago'. If you watch the intro to the Filmation series, LOD member The Riddler is shown, but never makes an appearance on the show.

Hope it doesn't violate to post these for fun :

Ted worked on all of the 60s Filmation DC shows, as narrator, and multiple character voices (Pa Kent, Black Manta, Commish Gordon, and all the Bat villains-except Catwoman. He was also Carter Winston in the Star Trek TAS ep "The Survivor",

When Hanna Barbera produced the Superfriends, they made a point of hiring Knight, as well as Olan Soule and Casey Kasem as Batman and Robin and nearly all the other voice actors who worked on the Filmation series.
