Well, we now know what SF show Adam Savage watches

On tonight's Five Fan Favorites episode he exclaims

"That was a frakking cool shot!"

Amusing to note the word escaping into the public domain!

ETA- And Tory's right, that final thing is just about the coolest shot they've ever done! (this is a different thing than the one Adam was getting excited about)

The word "frak" was being heard years ago on Veronica Mars, so it's been out there for a while.

And Adam and Jamie are both special-effects artists, so naturally they're well-versed in genre film and television. Adam's well-established as a thoroughgoing sci-fi geek. In fact, his famous catchphrase "I reject your reality and substitute my own" is a quote from an obscure '80s sci-fi film. So there's no question that his knowledge of geek lore runs deep and wide.

I thought it originated with nuBSG. Oh well.

Veronica Mars? Never watched it - was it the one with the dancing baby thing that spread out across the internet and ended up in TV ads?

It originated (in a slightly different spelling) with the old BSG, so the word has been around a while. That said, I'm under the impression that most of the recent media references to the word have happened since the new series made BSG popular again.

You're thinking of Ally McBeal. Veronica Mars is...something else. (I've never watched it.)

As stated, "frak" debuted in the original 1978-9 Galactica, though it was used far less often than it was on the revival series. Veronica Mars was a very good (at least for a year or so) high-school noir detective series that aired on UPN and The CW between 2004 and 2007. This was during the run of the new Galactica, and the show's creator was a huge BSG fan, and so he chose to pay tribute to the show by having genre-savvy characters in his show use "frak" as a substitute curse word. I wasn't claiming that VM originated the word, but rather that it was a show that helped spread awareness of the word beyond the BSG audience, predating the Mythbusters example by several years.

In fact, there's a Veronica Mars discussion thread currently on the front page of this forum:
