*SPOILERS* for "In the Name of Honor"
So after two years of searching I finally managed to obtain a copy of "In the Name of Honor" (new no less from our local Book World!). Being a fan of Mr Wards writing I couldn't wait to read it.
First, I was surprised to see the book was set between Star Trek V and VI as I knew nothing about it. But then much to my horror, the more I read the more my inner voice was saying no... No... NO...!
Kirk was making peace with the Klingons... and Koloth.
The further I got into the book the more I kept hearing those immortal lines between Spock and Kirk:
"Jim, They are dying."
"Let them die!"
I couldn't believe what I was reading! I kept checking the cover to make sure it was written by Dayton Ward. The book seemed to be undermining Star Trek VI. Those bastard Klingons had killed his son! How could he be making peace with them and say/feel what he did at the beginning of ST VI?!?!
I began to break out in a sweat!
Was I going to have to pull this book out of my personal continuity?!!!?!!?!?!?
That annoyed thought annoyed me to no end, because I really enjoyed the Garrovick/Sydney plotline. And I really enjoyed the backstory on how the Klingons were evolving from the Klingons of old to the Klingons of TNG... something I never felt was addressed sufficiently. I loved hearing about the rise of Gorkon. I loved seeing old school and new school Klingons going through growing pains. And the still hinted at mystery of the flat heads vs the ridgeheads. How could I love half the book and then be so angry at the other half. This was Dayton Ward writing it, right?
And then the end came, and everything fell into place! Perfectly into place in fact. Kirks pain was not only back, but reinforced! It made the scene in ST VI even better because now I will think of this as well when I hear those lines.
I felt guilty for even having doubted him. Sigh
Well played Mr Ward. Well played. Ya got me.
