Ok folks. I am putting this thread here for now, but mods can move it I suppose. I put a similar thread in sci and tech but I wanted to get more answers (thanks to all who chimed in previously).

Ok, When the internet - or the web - really hit, I was in college. I was doing schoolwork and partying while everyone else was learning how sites work.
Now I know a bit about sites, but I want to get very basic information - tell me like you'rre telling someone who doesn't know - that I have something to go on, some real fundamental knowledge.

What happened was my family's company has hired me and I went from a content writer to actually being the main person to do the website, or, as the case may be, to find someone to work on it. There are many companies, and even more 20-somethings that claim they can help me do everything I need to do. That might be the case, but I figured if I had knowledge, I might not get ripped.

So:

What is a host? What does it mean to be a hoster? Who should I go to? How xdo I know if someone is a good host?
What exactly is the relationship between host, and website owner, all that stuff.
What is the best way to run an eCommerce website wherein I can offer product and other kinds of information and can customize the shopping cart?

Any other advice/ site basics, and ecommerce basics you can offer would help.
