I'm planning on making a website, mostly a website to showcase a couple of my videos, writing, my resume, etc. No business stuff.

Anyone have any good recommendations for hosting companies? I don't really know where to start.

I heard godaddy, for instance, is a great place to register your domain, but a crappy place to actually use web-hosting services at. Someone else suggested bizland.com. Then I tried to research on sites, and got lost in a gigantic sea of webhosting companies, there are so. many. of. them. ughh.

So i dont know where to start. Ideally I don't want to spend more than like 7 or 8 a month (my site requirements aren't that high though I'd like to have at least a couple of gigs of web space and FTP access).

I've had good luck so far with Dreamhost.com. Good site storage and bandwith, both of which expand regularly the longer you have your account, and reasonable rates. I haven't encountered much, if any, in the way of downtime over the 2 years I've been with them.

I'm a six-year customer of HostRocket and I would highly recommend them. You get everything you could ask for and great tech support for $5 /month. The catch is a $30, one-time setup fee and you have to buy two years in advance to get the $4.99 monthly rate.
