80s-era, surface level sane appearing, Mel as Bond could have actually been pretty good.
It'd have required Mel to be cleaned up and have a haircut shorter than anything he'd worn on screen in years, but we could have done far worse than a second Bond with an Aussie accent.
They should’ve made it “from the dead” for shits and giggles.
Averaging out, though, it's just rebalancing the usual schedule to account for TMWTGG having come out at Christmas instead of Spring/Summer, and thus only one calendar year after LALD. There are four years between LALD and TSWLM, and the film in-between was a half-year off-schedule. In the long term, the usual pace of the films at that point was maintained.
I think I just can't shake the idea that there's a lot of bluffing going on and they've actually already got a lot of Bond #26 planned and already know who the next 007 will be. I realise I'm just being exceptionally hopeful here!

Just reboot him with a third official EON timeline and don't worry about bringing the one we last saw in No Time to Die back from some fiery death. I'm cool with the Craig continuity 007 being toast.
They could still do the opening of The Man with the Golden Gun novel and have Daniel Craig walk into M's office and try and kill him
