If they incorporate the latest retcons from Geoff Johns' run on Green Lantern, the "weakness to yellow" is caused by yellow representing fear (and fear's avatar, Parallax). Now, while they don't HAVE to incorporate this particular plot development, I think it shows that there are ways to make it work.

Actually, I think it makes a lot more sense if the ring doesn't work on matter that reflects a wavelength of 570 nm (i.e. yellow), a wavelength that interferes with the ring's energy. Then they can say it was built as a safeguard against abusing the ring's power.

If Superman can gain powers from the fact that our sun is yellow rather than red, indicating that the position of the sun rays' on the colour spectrum has a practical effect, then shouldn't Green Lantern be incapable of functioning in sunlight, because everything in bathed in a yellow hue?

Visible light emitted from the sun encompasses a range of wavelengths that includes "yellow". It could be argued that it takes a "pure", concentrated yellow wavelength to affect the ring...whatever that means. In any case, I think they could get away with it, even without such an explanation.
