WB sets release dates for Green Lantern, Inception and others

Warner Bros has set the following release dates:

December 25th, 2009 - Sherlock Holmes (directed by Guy Ritchie).
March 26th, 2010 - Clash of the Titans (directed by Louis Letterier).
July 16th, 2010 - Inception (directed by Christopher Nolan).
August 6th, 2010 - Jonah Hex (directed by Jimmy Hayward, starring Josh Brolin).
October 8th, 2010 - Sucker Punch (directed by Zack Snyder).
December 17th, 2010 - Green Lantern (directed by Martin Campbell).
July 15th, 2011 - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II.

I've been dreaming of a GL film for pretty much my entire life. Now, let's just hope they don't pull the plug at the last minute and that Campbell delivers a great film.

Somewhat peculiar for a major superhero film to get a winter release; they normally go for the summer (though Summer 2010 will have Iron Man 2 and Thor). Of course, lots of money to be made in the holiday season (and, if it does really well, January-February is a wasteland where a real hit can keep raking in cash).

I didn't even know they were making a Green Lantern film. Anyhow, it's good news. I don't know anything about the Holmes movie so I'll have to go and look into that.

Good to hear. Now the problem really begins: which GL's story will be chosen to be told - even though Jordan is the logical choice?

Does WB not think that Green Lantern is worthy of a summer release date, like Batman and Superman?

Huge blockbuster films are released in November/December, just as they are in the summer - one isn't superior to the other. Warners are basically putting Green Lantern into the same release slot that they used for I Am Legend.

Not necessarily. In the past decade WB had two big franchises which were mostly winter releases. Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. Both which were extremely successful at the Box at that time of year. Both of those series have a finite number of films which they will soon run out of. DC superhero films would be the perfect candidates to fill that void.

Thank you for the responses. Do you think WB also wanted to avoid competition from Marvel films?

Possibly, although the wider issue of not cluttering up any single summer with too many superhero films is likely a concern. Also, Martin Campbell only just signed on, so this'll give him a decent amount of time to make the film.

Green Lantern is the one whose weakness is the colour yellow, right?

...it'll be fun seeing how they try to protray that in the film.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

If they incorporate the latest retcons from Geoff Johns' run on Green Lantern, the "weakness to yellow" is caused by yellow representing fear (and fear's avatar, Parallax). Now, while they don't HAVE to incorporate this particular plot development, I think it shows that there are ways to make it work.
