If he was running around with 5 hardened sexy convicts, and they all considered their relationships with Tom to be %100 monogamous, then its highly likely that at least one of these unrepentant criminals is a vicious murderer, so Tom was probably under a sentence of death if he ever stopped being lost in space, and that is why the crew cocked it up, every time they had a sure fire rescue set up to return these brave heroes to the bosom of the Federation.

I'm just saying, the more famous you get, the harder it is to keep a secret.

Yeah. Probably that experimental quantum slipstream drive worked fine, until Tom found a way to subtly sabotage it without a trace, and then modeled his simulations on that. After all, he was the one to 'notice' and bring up the problem in the first place.

Not that he wanted everyone -including himself- dead. He probably never counted on Janeway to be so reckless she'd actually follow up on Harry's insane proposal to 'ride the rapids' in a shuttle and try the slipstream drive despite the risks.
