Was Spock Ever Promoted to Admiral?

Sorry to ask such a dumb question BUT was Spock ever promoted beyond first officer? Wasn't he an admiral in the later movies?

Any help here?

Thank you!

AFAIK, he was only a captain in the movies. By the time of TNG he seems to have left Starfleet, though. So I don't know if he was ever promoted to admiral.

Thanks! Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

I'm not sure there is much else to say. He was promoted to Captain and placed in command of the Enterprise sometime prior to ST II. In ST IV he reassumed his post as First Officer under Captain Kirk, but retained his rank of Captain until the end of the TOS Movie series. When he showed up in TNG he was a civilian ambassador and his former rank is not mentioned.

It is certainly possible that he was promoted after ST VI to Commodore or Rear-Admiral (or higher depending on how long he stayed in Star Fleet), but it is equally possible that he retired from the Fleet as a captain.

It would be interesting to know the reason for his not participating in the E-B launch hulabaloo. One would think he would be invited at least. Perhaps he had already resigned from the Fleet at that point, just as he spoke of doing in ST6 when suggesting that Valeris would become his successor aboard the E-A.

Then again, it's quite possible that Kirk, Scotty and even Chekov were retired during the ST:GEN prologue. Nobody actually mentioned their active status, that is.

In "Unification", Spock felt guilt for what had happened to Kirk during ST6. Or might it instead have been guilt for something that happened between ST6 and ST:GEN? Something that drove a rift between the two and prevented Spock from attending the launch promotion event?

the cut scene of Kirk skydiving from GEN suggests they were all retired.

the novelisation has extra narrative explaining Spock was on a diplomatic mission, McCoy was at a grand-daughter's graduation from the Vulcan Science Academy, Sulu was off on the Excelsior and Uhura was on vacation in a far-flung corner of the galaxy, FWIW...

...In other words, they had a life and didn't care much for the Ol' Big Giant Head.

Spock was still a Captain at the time of ST VI.
The scene with Valeris in his quarters suggested to me this idea:
He said the picture of man being cast out of paradise was a reminder to him that all things come to an end. With the crew preparing to retire or move on in a matter of months, I believe that Spock had made the decision to finally move into being an ambassador like his father. It was his own logical way of moving on with his life and trying to reunite the Vulcans and Romulans. It would be more beneficial to apply his own personal experience to that end rather than try to recapture his "Enterprise days" on another ship. I believe he retired from Starfleet duty as a Captain and moved on to the ambassadorship kind of like Worf at the end of DS9.

Considering Spock's storied career, it's not outside the realm of possibility that he was promoted to commodore or admiral on the last day of his active service—an honor occasionally bestowed on certain noted officers.

It would be interesting to know the reason for his not participating in the E-B launch hulabaloo.

Well, the practical reasons were Nimoy declined, and Kelley was in very bad health. (Note: Chekov suddenly becomes a "doctor" in the emergency." I imagine the lines were only changed slightly for him instead of McCoy.)

Actually, it's very easy to see both Spock and McCoy doing the Scotty/Chekov dialogue with only minor changes.

Any reasons the characters weren't there were later created to cover the casting changes.

Star Trek VI kinda implied that Spock was heading more into the field of diplomacy at that point. He may have been busy working with the Klingons, since it may not have been that long since the signing of the Khitomer Accords.

I tend to think Spock resigned his commission (again) not too long after Star Trek VI myself...
