Was Nichelle Nichols' son already in his teens when she got the part?

EJA

Fleet Captain
I think I remember reading on IMDB that Nichelle's son was born sometime around the early 50's. Nichelle got the role of Nyota Uhura around '66, so he would've been, what, fifteen years old?

Re: Was Nichelle Nichols' son already in his teens when she got the pa

Her son Kyle was born in August 1951 which would make him 15 when the show first started

Re: Was Nichelle Nichols' son already in his teens when she got the pa

^^^WOW. She was born in Dec. 1934 and she had a kid in 1951--at age 16???

"Not nearly so odd in 1951 as now."

What? It's way more common now. Were you joking?

Straight up question, no sarcasm: why are you interested in how old her son was? I don't get it.

Yes, my mocking post (#2) was along those lines but i guess other folks WERE interested:confused:

I find any info on the cast's family to be pretty much of no interest of mine. But to each his own.

"When did Shatner's daughters get married?"

ooh good one.

WHEN I CAME ABOARD !!!

She looked so young back then, I just thought it was amazing that she already had a teenaged son. And other people must have some interest in the cast's family lives, judging by the threads that were posted here a while ago when Jeri Ryan became pregnant with her second kid.

Doubtful. It's more noticed in this country now because there's more stigma attached to young parenthood than in previous generations. Currently about 84 percent of Americans 25 and older have high school diplomas; in 1940 it was less than 25 percent. More education coorelates with delayed parenthood.

You also have to know how to read statistics and realize that one figure isn't the full story. Teen mothers are less hidden and more likely to keep their children today than 50 years ago, or 100 years ago.

It's interesting to note that the good old days weren't always what we thought. Heck, at its peak after WWII, the so-called nuclear family with mom and dad and the kiddies was 47% of households. It was never the majority, even in "Happy Days". (As reported in the book "The Way We Never Were: American Families and the Nostalgia Trap"). "Golden Ages", on reflection, tend to be gilded...golden on the surface only.

Re: Was Nichelle Nichols' son already in his teens when she got the pa

When I was a teen in the 1970s, almost all of my friends were in intact families and most people around were married. (This was in the suburbs.)

When my girls were teens, very few were in intact families. In fact, most were not. If they weren't in single parent homes, they were in homes where their birth parent was on a second marriage.

Of course, there were plenty of divorces in my teen years. Parents did try to keep it together for the kids though, if they could. That's not as common today. Children out-of-wedlock in the white community back then meant getting married ASAP and living together, if done, was not talked about openly and was frowned up by polite society.
