    No; just a running joke.

that, and by not speaking they probably didn't have to pay the actor as much

If you look in the background of some episodes, you can see Morn having conversations with people.

He speaks at ultrasonic frequencies microphones at the time couldn't detect.

There's an episode where Quark asks him a question. He opens his mouth and indicates he's about to speak when Quark cuts him off.

That doesn't mean he's not a telepath too, though. ;)

That's "WHO MOURNS FOR MORN?" at the very end.

That thought never occured to me, because I knew it was a running gag throughout DS9. Like 47 in the franchise.

    Doesn't mean it's impossible, though.

(referencing Night Court, and my comment on the Richard Arnold thread in the TrekLit section)

We don't even know whether he was a mammal.

The Universal Translator should take care of that, though.

I was actually thinking of this scene from The Jem'Hadar.

Quark: "Morn, you've been sitting here all day staring at the same drink. Talk to me. I want to help. I'm not just your bartender, I'm your friend. Whatever's wrong, I'm here for you."
    Morn opens his mouth...
    Quark: "Hold that thought!"

Now we wait until someone suggests that Quark was speaking literally, "Hold that thought" ...telepath confirmed! ;)

The Mourns example is a good one though, them really playing into the comedy of not letting him speak, having Quark do all the exposition himself. :D

If Morn was really a telepath, Odo would have recruited him to help find Lwaxana's stolen brooch, not to mention help keep an eye on Quark.

You know, this was my first thought when I began watching DS9, and I kept waiting for the big reveal ... I was somewhat disappointed when I saw the end credits of the last episode roll by.

Ferengi tend to not be readable by telepaths due to their four lobed brains.

Whoever came up with that didn't know much about brains. Humans have four-lobed brains: frontal, temporal, occipital, and parietal.

Morn spoke through pheromones. It explains all his successes.

Well, Dax did have a crush on him.

Also, he and Worf were sparring partners.

Didn't she admit it to Worf?
