Was killing Jennifer Sisko twice the cruellest bit of ST writing?

I'm a newbie, at only two years and change.

Was it cruel? Maybe. Was it the cruelest thing in Trek? Probably not. I can think of several worse things that Trek writers had happen to characters. Kasidy losing Sisko, Carey dying just weeks from Voyager getting home, Trip and T'Pol losing their baby right after meeting her, Lwaxana losing a child and then feeling that she has to erase her from her life, O'Brien getting essentially tortured for twenty years (even if it didn't happen), a whole planet dying while Picard spews some lame- speech about "honoring the lives we cannot save"... I could go on and on.

Jennifer should not have even been brought back.

If the writing was better, if there was a time where the producers wanted to put Jake to rest, Mirror Jennifer could've taken him away and they share valuable time together and write him out of the series. Killing her off again without making an effort to actually do something with her was a complete waste of time, so I agree with you.

Sisko is dumb.

The Prophets wanted him single.

His wish to have a wife in defiance to their plan, could have been to have either of his wives.

The Prophets killed Jennifer too.

I could see it being really cruel to the characters but I guess it doesn't feel that way to me. I never really liked that part of "Shattered Mirror" and even if it makes sense with the characters in the situation it still feels a bit clearing house of duplicates or other love interests so the writers don't have to deal with it. I sorta wish she'd only appeared in "Through the Looking Glass"

Very true, which is why I think it was cruel to have Jennifer be killed twice. The first death was enough.

I think killing the MU Jennifer was a bad idea. I hoped she was going to come to deep space 9 on the reg. I wonder why they didn’t beam her to deep space nine when she was shot so Jillian could save her life.

But what would happen to her then? Would she stick around DS9 tormenting Sisko with someone who looked just like his wife but wasn't her? Or get them involved, both knowing that it was a bad idea from the start? If not, where else in the prime universe would it make sense for her to go?
