Warners signs director for DC's Deadman

As confirmed by Variety, Warners has signed Danish director Nikolaj Arcel to helm Deadman. Guillermo del Toro, Don Murphy and Susan Montford will produce the film. The project started development three years ago as a potential directing vehicle for del Toro, but his schedule has turned out to be too busy to helm it himself. Enter Nikolaj Arcel, director of two Danish films: King's Game and Island of Lost Souls. Arcel is currently in pre-production on another Danish film, so if Deadman proceeds it'll likely be released in 2011 at the earliest.

As things currently stand there will be three films based on DC Comics or one of its imprints released in 2010:

The Losers (April 16th, WB, directed by Sylvain White, starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Zoe Saldana, Chris Evans, Jason Patric, and Columbus Short)
Jonah Hex (June 18th, WB, directed by Jimmy Hayward, starring Josh Brolin, Megan Fox, and John Malkovich)
Red (release date TBA, Summit Entertainment, directed by Robert Schwentke, starring Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman)

Deadman has great potential as a movie. Much more than just another Superhero flick with stock hero vs villain plotlines.

Always liked Deadman. I wonder if he'll appear more like he has over the years, or if they'll make him look as they did in Kingdom Come, all skeletal. -- RR

Maybe both looks will be used.

First time I read a Deaman story was in a DC Superheroes Christmas special in the late 1980s. I a was struck by the similarities to my favorite tv series Quantum Leap. With Deadman taking over the lives of other people. Though presumably in the movie the actor cast as Boston Brand/Deadman would not play those people.

I'll probably see the first two in theaters. I don't know anything about Red. I consider 2010 a drought year because there won't be any films based on DC's A-list superheroes.

Yeah, BB was just saying 2010 doesn't have any major DC characters on the big screen like Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, etc., but only has minor characters/films based on graphic novels. Nothing wrong with that, but it is slightly disappointing. Too bad Green Lantern got pushed to summer 2011.
