Warner Bros developing film adaptation of DC's Suicide Squad

Out Of My Vulcan Mind

From Variety:

Warner Bros. is going on a suicide mission, setting up the DC Comics property "Suicide Squad" for Dan Lin ("Sherlock Holmes") to produce as a potential franchise.

In a departure from normal comic-based fare, "Suicide Squad" concentrates on a group of incarcerated supervillains rather than the usual focus on superheroes. The first version of the squad debuted in a 1959 DC Comic, and a series was launched in 1987.

Stephen Gilchrist from Lin Pictures will co-produce. Justin Marks is penning the screenplay.

"Suicide Squad" will feature a mix of well-known and unknown villains recruited by the government to accomplish a task deemed too dangerous for superheroes. The historically independent operators must bury their own interpersonal conflicts and agendas to form a cohesive unit to take on a singular task.

well-known and unknown villains
I would be curious about their definition of this! The most well known villains that DC has are Batman characters. I doubt they will have access to any.

Looked up the history online and it sounds like a GREAT concept. My worry is that there will be no recognizeable "name" villians to speak of.

This could be a great movie IF you get a good team list of recognizable villains AND they get someone suitable to fight against.

Problem is, other than the Bat villains and Lex Luthor and Zod, there are not many (if any) DC villains that general audiences would recognize.

I think that's a marketing problem (which of course is half the battle) but not being held to a public perception of who should be in the Squad (because it IS so unknown) could be very freeing.

Well that sort of applies to the Watchmen film as well.

I think it has potential.

I don't think they necessarily need supervillains who are famous to the general public in the film. The premise is high concept and inherently marketable. With the right cast and an eye-catching trailer the film could do well, even if most ofthe villains featured are new to the general public.

When I say "recognizable" villains I mean Boomerang, Deadshot, Flagg, etc. Just not made up villains.

Flagg and Deadshot are almost mandatory, aren't they? Boomer is pretty good too, and something of a comical choice. Killer Frost would be a nice variety choice.

I just started re-reading this series recently and thought it would be a great premise for a movie. I really hope they use Deadshot and Boomerang as villains.

I think I have the complete run of this in my boxes downstairs, including a triple cover (!)...

... I think the idea could work.

Yeah, gotta have Flagg and Deadshot at a minimum.

I'd argue that Boomerang is just as needed. He was a key component to the comic, adding a degree of comic relief, but also someone completely amoral, without any the major psychosis exhibited by Deadshot or even Flagg.

Bronze Tiger is also very much needed. Flagg needs someone to back him up and Ben always served as a sort of conscience for the team, with his pledge not to take another life.

Digger wasn't really that hefty during the run of the comic, it was only later, especially in Identity Crisis that he packed on the pounds.
