We have quite a few mushers here. I think it should be possible to rent a few dogs and a sledge from one. Alternatively, you can hire a horse sleigh or go skiing.
Especially in the first half of October it's also a lovely hiking region. Our "Indian Summer" is less colourful than the Canadian one, but nevertheless rather impressive. But admittedly I am totally biased.
