Wall in observation lounge

JesterFace

I'm not exactly sure why I started to wonder what do people think about the wall in the observation lounge.

The wall changed over the years, which one do you like better, original with the golden ships or the updated one?

I think they're both nice but maybe the original with the golden ships looks a little bit better.

The "season 5-onward" has a more "1990s office" look. It's snazzy, but...

the "season 1-4" design seems more in tune with the ship's lineage (in-scale as well?) and, indeed, the TNG movie era returned to using model visage sculptures as well as sequel and related shows... add in how Picard had Stargazer in his ready room, suggesting it might have been his favorite ship (even despite getting to captain the flagship, the Big-D) and the minutiae adds in a lovely bit of world-building while not simultaneously delving into small universe syndrome-- the word "iconic" applies. Count me in as the 1-4 design, albeit with two viewscreens (a la season 2-onward) being the bestest.

Anyone, correct me if I'm wrong: Sorta sad that the wall models, made of polystyrene (?), were summarily junked before the big set revamp and there are a couple of guesses as to why - but collected by one of the show's lead writers, hence their fortunate reappearance in "All Good Things...". Wasn't able to find the article discussing their history, might be Memory Alpha or Ex Astris Scientia? Or blu-ray? .

They mean the wall in your image has the original designs for the Enterprise B and C, not the ones we eventually saw on screen.

Wait, hang on...

in opposed to what? Was there something else before? The ring ship?
As someone said, the one on the wall is closer to Probert's original design than Yesterday's Enterprise. And of course the B is a straight up Excelsior. No modifications.

Ironically it was that wall (the story goes) that convinced Berman that the Enterprise B had to be an Excelsior class for Generations. He apparently wanted it to be something else. (Something new? )

Just spotted the version in the top picture on the Cerritos

Do you remember the scene early on in AGT where Picard is recording his log.
He's touching the golden ship models on the wall.
There might be a IRL reason and one scripted.
IRL - People making the episode were happy that Ronald D Moore had kept the golden models when the wall was replaced for season 5.
Scripted one - Picard was nostalgic about the old wall because by end on season 7 it had been gone for years.

I thought it was because the room was going to be used in TUC. I just checked MA but I didn't see that they addressed this.

But agreed, the ship models were cool; the revamp was hopelessly generic.

I'd thought the same, re: TUC being the catalyst in all this as they redressed that set for the 1701-A dining room then blew it up, replacing the rear wall with the angled adornments and covering all the recessed lights overhead. :(

That revamp definitely lost a lot of character, though - at the time - it did have that great late-80s look.

I thought in attaching the overlay they had inadvertently destroyed what was underneath. I'm sure Jörg Hillebrand knows.

You know, in retrospect, it seems odd that they included the aircraft carrier Enterprise as part of the lineage, but left off the space shuttle Enterprise. Obviously, they weren't going to be able to include every vessel that's ever been called Enterprise, but in-universe it would make sense to have the first ever space vessel to have the name and IRL it would make sense to have the space shuttle that was so named because of Star Trek fans.

Maybe some kids came in and accidentally pulled the space shuttle off the wall, along with the NX-01, and they were never able to find them again.
