VULCAN (future movies, SPOILERS) -- POLL

How do you handle Vulcan?

Star Trek lost its sense of danger and the destruction of Vulcan brought that back in a big way (arguably for the first time since III, when the climax of the previous movie was negated).

The destruction of Vulcan was the defining point of the movie, and was precisely where I shat myself - oh no they didn't!

It was a very bold move and shouldn't be undone. A race that likes to keep their emotions under control has their home planet destroyed, and causes much conflict for Spock. I loved it.

This movie is clearly in an alternate timeline, where from now on many things have changed due to Nero/old-Spock.

Never bring it back. The destruction of Vulcan - and the aftermath of it - is going to be a big part of what makes this Trek relevant for a new generation. TOS had their Cold War parallels, we have ours. Smartest thing they could have done.

I HATE, HATE, HATE that Vulcan is destroyed. But now that it's done, I demand a reset.

Yes, it brought a huge emotional impact to this movie, but it fundamentally changes the core values of Star Trek. That aliens and humans can live in a peaceful wonderful world in the future.

The destruction of Vulcan heralded, to me, a new age of Star Trek without the reset button. Let's keep it that way!

I'm sorry, I don't follow. It changes the values of co-existence? Or does it simply acknowledge that there are people in the universe who don't share those values, and that sometimes, they do horrible things, and you can't take those things back?

Agreed, just imagine what the consequences will be for the Vulcans in the Abramsverse and the way it could impact story's. They could well end up developing an extreme hatred for the Romulans that threatens to undo their culture of emotional control. Old spock is going to have to work hard to keep them on the straight and narrow.

Now that's sheer rubbish. If you'd argued "that aliens and Vulcans can live", I might have agreed. But since Vulcans are not the only alien race close to humanity by a long shot, this just doesn't jibe.

Aside from the face that the destruction of Vulcan has nothing to do whatsoever with our future peaceful existence.

I really was unsure about the destruction of Vulcan at first. But it's an alternate timeline, so I'm prepared to go with it.

And I love the fact that nothing is sacred now. They can KILL any of the original crew now. Nothing has to be the same. Major events will probably still happen. There'll probably still be a TNG crew. But how will it differ? Will Worf still be there?

So many interesting things could happen.

Fascinating.

Keep destroyed so that things mean something in this universe and actions have consequences. NO RESET BUTTON EVER. Thank you.

+1
I was really worried they were gonna use the reset button once the planet was destroyed..but it never happened..kudos to the writers for having guts and sticking to it.

The destruction of Vulcan and one of the federations strongest members makes the federation weaker to the Romulans. I don't say the Klingons, because they suffered the loss of 47 ships.

It makes the federation less stable.

I can understand why people don't want a reset, and typically I'd agree. But not Vulcan. I'd be saying the same thing if it was Earth.

Of all the changes that were made in creating a new, fresher version of Star Trek, Abrams and the writers found probably the only thing that could bother me: the destruction of Vulcan.

Spock and, by extension, the Vulcans were the original and most enduring example Star Trek gave of how we could learn to accept and ultimately respect and even embrace someone fundamentally different from us.
And Spock, through his use of Vulcan philosophy, was one of the few characters who could effectively point out flaws in human nature and human attitudes. I would say that only Quark, surprisingly, was even in the same ballpark on that score.

To me, the Vulcans are too vital a part of the Federation and contributed too much to Star Trek's intelligence through the years. It's comparable to having the Joker kill Dick Grayson instead of Jason Todd, or having the Hobbits form the fellowship of the ring because Sauron razed the Shire.
