Voyagers weapons systems

While looking at a picture of Voyager I noticed that the torpedoe launchers all seem to be located on the bottom part of the ship. They are right by the main deflector dish. From that location, there would be no way to launch any torpedoes in an upward angle. I realize that Voyager also has rear facing launcher tubes, however that still does not address this problem. Does Voyager have any launchers on top of the main saucer section, just having the Phaser rails would seem to limit it's defensive capaibilities...

Torpedoes aren't close-in weapons. Nothing is lost if they cannot reach a target that sits a hundred meters above the ship, because if they were detonated a hundred meters above the ship, the ship herself would be destroyed, too.

In today's warships, it's of crucial importance that the radar-controlled CIWS cannon are placed so that they can cover every possible approach angle of a hostile missile, and keep on firing at it until literally the last second. It is of no importance where the anti-aircraft missile launchers point, though, because they will never fire into the possible "blind spots" anyway. They will only fire at targets that are so distant from the ship that there are no blind spots created by the ship's structures there.

Submarines of old used to have aft-pointing torpedo tubes, partially because the subs were a bit clumsy and couldn't always bring their bow tubes to bear. An equally important factor there was that the bow could only contain so many tubes, though - so extra tubes where stowed in strange locations, including the stern, or the upper deck, or the conning tower, and pointing whichever way.

Modern submarines only have bow tubes, though, since they can turn fast enough to cover most situations, and the torpedoes can turn fast enough to cover the rest. Or to be sure, the big oceangoing subs have amidships tubes, because the bow is reserved for the big sonar. It might make best sense to only give aft tubes to some of these subs - say, the ballistic missile ones - as torpedoes would only be fired at a chasing enemy anyway. But it might also make sense to give aft tubes to all subs, because that might help with forward angle stealth, and the direction in which the torps are launched would be irrelevant if the torps could maneuver.

And Trek torpedoes certainly can maneuver. We have seen them do tight corkscrews in TOS movies and in TNG at least.

Thanks for the feedback reguarding my question about Voyagers Topedoes. In a vacuume it would be easy to do a barrel role to bring certain weapons to bear...

They actually did install some dorsal mounted torpedo tubes in Scorpion Part 2 to fight Species 8472. They just ended up uninstalling them.

Also, it looks as if the bow tubes are angled a bit down (or they wouldn't clear the underside of the primary hull), and the aft tubes could correspondingly be angled a bit up. So essentially we might be talking about ventral and dorsal torpedo tubes instead of forward and aft ones...

This isn't exclusive to Voyager, is it? I don't think any of the ships have torpedo launchers on top.

^ The only ship that we've seen with torpedo lauchers in directions other than forward or aft is the Akira Class.

...Assuming that those sideways holes in the saucer are torpedo tubes "for real". I mean, it's far from rare that certain intentions of a starship designer are ignored when the ship is put to action on screen. And the Akira has never fired athwartships torpedoes.

I may be imagining this but when janeway had to manually launch a torpedo, didn't it come from the top of the ship?

IIRC, there is one instance where NCC-74656 fires torpedoes that seem to come from an impossible place, though: they emerge aft from under the fantail.

Can anybody point me to this episode? It was in the early seasons, and I remember there was a blue-green planet in the background. And I am about 93.2% sure I'm not dreaming this up.
