Voyager question

Smitty

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
I am not sure whether to post this here or in the voyager tv series forum. I figure here since the reason I am asking relates to the voyager books.

What would be considered the essential Voyager episodes to watch to get the overall story of the series and those important plot points that play a major role in the continuation of the series in books? For instance, I am sure the episode where 7 of 9 (not sure what its' called) seems like it would be important.

Maybe too much of a question but I figure its' worth a try.

An interesting question, Smitty.

Starting with the Christie Golden novels, for Homecoming and The Farther Shore, I would suggest "Initiations", "Author, Author" and "Endgame". "Initiations" is not absolutely necessary, but that episode is the first (and only?) appearance of Libby Webber.

For the Spirit Walk duology, the essentials would be "Barge of the Dead", "Nothing Human" and "Tattoo".

As for the Beyer novels, I'm going to re-read them shortly as I wouldn't trust my memory with them. The only reference I remember was regarding the Mikhal Travellers which appeared in "Darkling", but its not a major thing.

ETA: A major episode for the first half of Full Circle would of course be "Prophecy", and less important for the earlier Golden novels.

Episodes:

Caretaker+ all the episodes With Kazons in them, all the borg-centered episodes and Homecoming the finale.

I'd be curious as to why. I haven't read all of the Golden novels, but I don't recall the Kazon playing a role in them at all, or the series itself past the second or third season.

The op also mentioned to get the main storyline of the series. That would be a must larger list.

Indeed, which is part of the reason I never did it in my post. You could probably include almost every episode on there, depending on your viewpoint. Obviously any episode where they attempt to get home, the whole Seska arc, major Borg episodes, the introduction of Seven, Icheb and the Borg children. Then there's the Paris-Torres romance.

It all depends on how narrow you want the viewpoint really. For me, the key episodes would be.

If a theory I've developed proves to be true, than watching Favorite Son (S3, E19) would a good idea.

The op also mentioned to get the main storyline of the series. That would be a must larger list.

That would have to include episodes like Future's End Parts 1 & 2 (where the Doc gets his mobile emitter, otherwise when Voyager got back to the Alpha Quadrant old Doc would probably be a decompiled program after what occurred in Homecoming & The Farther Shore with Voyager being stripped of all it's Delta Quadrant/Future updates.

"Initiations" is not absolutely necessary, but that episode is the first (and only?) appearance of Libby Webber.

Actually, Libby's appearance was in Non Sequitur. Initiations was about Chakotay with a Kazon going through some coming of age ritual.

Thanks for all the feedback everybody. Having read the posts I realize now that it would be hard to come up with a good and concise list. I have seen every TNG episode several times and I am sure I would not be successful in telling someone what top 10 episodes or so they should watch in order to enjoy all the new trek lit!

I have a Voyager literature question too; I'm not sure if this was the right spot to post it, but here goes: Has anyone tried any of the recipes from the Star Trek Cookbook written with Neelix's recipes? Any suggestions?

Pocket tends to assume that "stardate years" run January to December, so "Endgame" would fall at the end of 2377.
