The entries are so neat! I dare not compete.
I guess I'll download that picture editing program recommended in it when I have the time. "Paint" has its limits... Although I find it good for covering unwanted bits on pictures... other than av contests so far.

I was a bit reluctant before I enterd my first AV contest.

I have learned a lot about using photoshop, and recently making animated AVs.
It really does not matter if you are good at these things or not.

The important thing is that you enjoy making or choosing the AV.

You may use a picture as you find it,
or edit it slightly,
or edit it a lot.
or create an animated pic.

I have spent ages editing pics, and got no votes!
but the time I spent making them was what was fun!

Aw, thanks to you both. That warms my heart.
I do enjoy doing avs, as their multiplicity in my posts suggest, but I often lose too much definition in resizing. That's the neatness I felt lacking.

Lately, avatar contests have been my sole participation in the TBBS, as I am now spending a lot of time capturing, editing, and sometimes captioning (or "painting" in different hues over channel logos) pictures of a certain British actor (a rising star) whose appreciation and fan activities I share with my sister (she got me into it).
Unfortunately, he hasn't made any sci fi (as of yet) so he doesn't really belong here.

But just a glimpse... (I whipped it up for this post )

ria - I recomend XnView or Irfanview if you want something simple but effective. They will both help you keep the resolution much better than Paint can. Just make sure to change the the quality setting in options if they aren't set on best quality already. And I looked Richard Armitage up on imdb and saw that he had been on Vicar of Dibley, where I think he played the boyfriend. That show is hilarious!

I think GIMP is very efficient for picture editing. It's similar to PSP and it's for free

Armitage is the new lead since the beginning of the latest series 7 of "Spooks" (MI5) - not yet aired much outside the UK. He was absolutely adorable in Dibley but in Spooks he's the man! The avatar above is from episode 4. Lucas North kicks ass and looks great doing it.
RA sounds great, too, especially in BBC's new Robin Hood show where he plays the somber, stubbly, long-haired, black leather-clad bad Guy (of Gisborne). If you're more into period drama/romance, the tv movie North & South takes after Pride & Prejudice.

Plus my first avs were pretty lame when I started doing these contests. I had no experience in photo editing prior to doing the av contest. You learn as you go along. It's all just for fun anyway.
