I thought I read somewhere his name was "Louis Lane"? Or was that apocryphal?!

I don't think I've heard about "Louis Lane" before, but I do remember him introducing himself to Flanders as Jeff Albertson in one episode.

Short version is that Matt had planned on naming him that but he wasn't around when the writers came up with the name they used.
