Volunteer advice...

BJ Wagner

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
I've been out of work for several months due to the downturn in the local economy and am considering seeking volunteer opportunities this fall. I need to keep busy and have little faith that I'll be able to find a job before next spring.

Has anyone ever volunteered with either Habitat for Humanity or the Food Bank in their community?

If not with either of these organizations, is there any others that you may have experience with and would recommend?

I've volunteered at the public library -- mostly helping people with job search stuff like writing resumés and submitting online applications -- and a couple art museums. A friend who worked with Habitat for Humanity said it was a really good experience, and I know it's a well-run organization. Basically, I would recommend going with whatever organization is providing a service that particularly interests you and will either make good use of your skills or help you develop new ones.

I've volunteered for Meals on Wheels. It's a great organization. But you need car and the ability to pay for your own gas. Habitat for Humanity is a great charity--but keep in mind you will be outdoors and doing physical labor, so you should be in decent shape. Of course, depending on the weather conditions in your area, Habitat may not be going year-round. The Food Bank might be better if you want to keep busy on a more consistent schedule.

I too volunteer at Meals on Wheels, I do food prep in the kitchen and it's the most satisfying thing in the world. I do it twice a week and I wish I could do more. I've also volunteered at Habitat for Humanity and Rebuild Together in New Orleans after the hurricane. Even with limited construction experience I was able to lay flooring in a whole house and put up drywall in another. The best thing is you work side by side with the house owner.
