Voice acting thread

The Overlord

What do you think of the voice acting in this show?

I find it interesting that Gwyn's voice actor is British, but she sounds American in this show. I like the contrast between Rok-Tahk voice and her appearance. Its kinda fun having Mulgrew back as Janeway.

Mulgrew and Noble are the clear standouts, but that's mainly attributed to their distinct voices and the fact they're probably the two most experienced members of the cast.

Really impressed with Ella Purnell, who also just turned in a really good performance in Arcane, which was a surprisingly good animated series that dropped on Netflix recently.

Honestly, though, I've yet to be disappointed by one of the voice performances so far. Good cast.

It happens all the time (Hugh Laurie did it for House. Sir Anthony Hopkins did it for Nixon.)

It works the other way too (Texas-born Renee Zellweger played the British Bridget Jones. Meryl Streep won an Oscar for playing Margaret Thatcher).

John Hillerman (R.I.P.) -- who played Higgins on the 80's Magnum P.I. -- was actually from Texas (His accent was good enough to fool Britain's Princess Anne! )

Margot Robbie is from Australia, yet she plays Harley Quinn with an American accent.

Yup! An American actor who plays British roles a lot lately ‪‪is Gillian Anderson, and I know a lot of people who were surprised when they learned Millie Bobby Brown from Stranger Things was British.

Another example on this series is John Noble, the voice of the Diviner, who doesn’t really use his native Australian accent in anything.

Years ago, John Hillerman said in an interview that he met Princess Anne at a charity function. She asked him what part of England he was from.

When John replied, "Denison, Texas," the poor thing turned white!

Gillian recently played Margaret Thatcher on The Crown.

A lot of people were surprised to hear her speaking with an American accent (She's an American born in Chicago. Why wouldn't she use her natural accent? :shifty: )

And then there's The Walking Dead franchise which has a lot of British actors, and a good amount of Australian ones too all doing American accents.

You know what is a fun fact? The young girl voicing Rok-Tahk is the daughter of a major voice actor who did the voice from Rocko's Modern Life and was on Reno 911.

‪‪I noticed that as well! He was also the voice of the Taco Bell chihuahua from the ‘90s ad campaign.

With a voice acting history like his, Rylee is following a big legacy, and ‪‪I think has done a great job doing so as Rok Tahk.

Edited to add: ‪‪I just saw that Carlos Alazraqui did voice work on a brand new Christmas special for the other animated show created by Lower Decks’ Mike McMahon, Solar Opposites, and now I can’t help but hope to see him do a guest spot on LD, joining Rylee in the world of Trek voice acting, and making it a family affair.

Why not Prodigy?

Father and daughter together! :)

I just figured that since he and McMahon have collaborated already, that them doing so again on LD would be fairly likely, but I’d love to see (hear?) him with Rylee on Prodigy as well!
