Hey, you know what scholastic sport has resulted in over 100 deaths and catastrophic injuries in the past 25 years or so? Cheerleading. People don't get all worked up over that, why would they get worked up over this?

It's okay if girls get hurt doing girly stuff obviously. It's bad if they get hurt doing men stuff.

Cheerleading I think still has a "not taken seriously" rep which might be why it gets overlooked or paid little attention to in terms of injury. In the minds of a lot of people "it's not a real sport" so how can girls get especially hurt doing it?

I was certainly guilty of not taking seriously the risks with how gymnastics-like cheerleading has become. But I had a friend in college with a messed up knee that explained to me how dangerous it could be, so I'm more educated now. That's a really interesting story though, I wonder why the rate of injury is so high? Lack of proper safety procedures? Lack of proper training? Simply the fact of the stunts they're doing?

I imagine it's the fact that cheerleading isn't considered a "sport." Which is unfortunate.

But yeah, I agree that the entire premise of this thread is sexist.

I didn't intend it to be sexist. I'm happy for her, but was pointing out that if she gets hurt, it will be all over the media in a way that a guy in that position would not be.

The most disgusting thing about Katie Hnida's treatment at CU was coach Gary Barnett, when confronted by the media about Katie's sexual assault, turned the topic of conversation to how terrible Hnida's kicking was, as if that somehow justified her treatment. Boy, the Buffs have had some real asshats in the HC position, haven't they? First Bill McCartney, then Barnett.
Fortunately Katie's story had a happy ending at UNM, where she became the first woman football player to score points in a college football game and even got to attempt an extra point in a bowl game. Katie Hnida is my heroine.
