Aside from the weak "Badda bing, badda bang" episode which was just frankly ridiculous (TNG would at least say aliens did it when they wanted to do a silly episode) and the bizarre mirror universe episode where a fictional character (Vic) is an actual living person eh...what!....what were people's thoughts on this character

I didn't dislike him as a background thing but when they brought him to the foreground as a character, it just didn't really appeal to me at all

I never really understood the point

I think "Badda-Bing, Badda-Bang" has a reputation of being a good episode; it was a caper, a nice fun episode for the actors and writers before they got into the "Final Chapter" arc.

Vic episodes are some of my favorites. Just fun, IMO.

I couldn't stand Vic Fontaine, it was ridiculous to have the whole crew so obsessed with a 20th century crooner. Bashir kind of made sense, but nobody else. Then Quark devotes his entire holosuite to just Vic Fontaine's program? Vic Fontaine is equally dumb an idea as Voyager's Fair Haven.

Quark had at least six holosuites.

There's also the fact that Vic played a huge role in his nephew's recovery.

One of my very favourite episodes of my favourite Trek series. A great fun homage to Oceans 11 and Robin And The Seven Hoods type movies. If you can't enjoy a swingin' caper movie there's no hope for you.

And as for Vic - his point was to give them a bit of scope and variety in the storytelling. Darren was brilliant in the role and 'Vic' episodes were often the most heartfelt and touching - Vic was the counselor on the station...

And Bashir can afford to book one of them full time?

Sure, why can't Bashir afford to book one holosuite full-time? What do we know of Quark's rates? What do we know about Bashir's personal wealth? Almost nothing.

It was Quark's decision to keep Vic's program running continuously IIRC.

I wish Vic had been able to sing one of James Darren's hits from the 1960s (like "Goodbye Cruel World"). Though that might have been too much of an inside joke.

HATED Vic. Hated his small scenes in otherwise good episodes, REALLY hated episodes where he got a lot of screen-time. The singing was mind-numbing, the idea that anyone in the 20th century would give a shit about him was stupid, thinking that 24th century folks would give a shit was even dumber.

Vic Fontaine was utilized more than Fair Haven.

Plus no one on the DS9 crew slept with Vic. ;)

Yeah, but I think Nog was getting close to it during that time he crashed at Vic's place for a week.

I don't mind Vic as a character, it's the idea that 24th-century people will all be obsessed with 20th-century Earth that bothers me. Why isn't anyone ever nostalgic about 22nd-century Betazed, or 19th-century Romulus?

Why is it only humans from the past who are allowed to have pop culture?

I liked the character, and who is to say that late 24th century humans wouldn't find the 1960's interesting? For all we know the study of 20th century pop culture is all the rage among intellectuals at that point in time of DS9's run, thus the ultra-realistic casino/lounge program was created.

I could've done without "Its Only a Paper Moon," but if you look at it from Nog's perspective, it kind of makes sense. It's not like Nog can go talk to the local bartender because it's Quark.

Because Vulcan couldn't produce any stand-up comics.

We've seen references to Ferengi pop culture (Marauder Mo, Sluggo Cola). It stands to reason that it exists everywhere else and in much greater quantities. We just don't see it because we're following human characters most of the time.

I didn't care for Vic. I'm not a fan of the 1960s era of entertainment of cheesy lounge singers and guady decor.

I watched DS9 for Star Trek, sci-fi, and space battles. If I wanted cheese I'd watch an old Rat Pack movie or listen to some Frank Sinatra crap.

But that's just me. To each his own. :)

Meh, really was overused in my opinion. The whole 50's Vegas bit was just... completely out of setting, especially when Vic was seemingly smarter than the rest of the cast. James Daren is pretty good at singing but, when you have episodes like His Way filled with half that, it's not exactly what I'm tuning in for.
