Hey pals,

Longtime lurker, rarely post on here. But, I'm a huge Star Trek fan nonetheless and have seen the movies numerous times (probably over 100 for 1-6).

ANYWAYS, I'm watching it for the first time in HD and noticed a few things that I wanted to discuss/ask.

1) What is that thing that Captain Styles keeps carrying around with him in the movie?

2) The helm officer of the excelsior is the guy who designs Robocop in Robocop.

3) What color were the uniforms of the two guys in the spacedock "bridge"? I always assumed they were the standard engineering ones, but with the light, they seemed funky.

4) Somewhere I would like to see a full bridge shot of the klingon vessel and the reasoning behind going to a completely different bridge for TVH.

5) The guy who first gets punched in the holding cell of the prison looks an awful lot like that loser Mr. Adventure in the transporter room.

6) Here's another one (last one, I promise): When Kirk does the Vulcan hand sign, his pinky and fourth finger are tied together with fishing line (you can see it if you pause it).

A swagger stick.

Yep. Miguel Ferrer, son of Jose Ferrer, and is also the comic book writing partner of Bill ("Lost in Space") Mumy.

4) the reasoning behind going to a completely different bridge for TVH.
Nimoy needed different camera angles, and there was more money to spend, so they reconfigured the bridge. The script makes it clear that Scotty has been busy for their three-month exile.

5) The guy who first gets punched in the holding cell of the prison looks an awful lot like that loser Mr. Adventure in the transporter room.
No, it's not Scott McGinnis, but one of the two guards is actor Gary Faga. He had a dark mustache when he was the same guy neck-pinched by Spock in the airlock of the Enterprise in ST:TMP. The blondish guard is played by Douglas Alan Shanklin.

Yep. Not everyone can do that trick. Celia Lovsky (T'Pau in "Amok Time") had to position her fingers with her other hand, off-camera, in TOS.

A lightsaber, duh.

He's also George Clooney's cousin.

I don't remember this scene.

4) Somewhere I would like to see a full bridge shot of the klingon vessel and the reasoning behind going to a completely different bridge for TVH.

It's simple really. The reason there's a different bridge in TVH is because it's a completely separate production from TSFS. If that real-world explanation isn't good enough, the opening of the film (TVH) does go to some length to explain that Scotty and the Vulcans had been retrofitting the Bounty to be more human-friendly. It's entirely possible that in the space of time that the crew was on Vulcan while Spock was being re-educated, there were major refits done to the bird of prey.

5) The guy who first gets punched in the holding cell of the prison looks an awful lot like that loser Mr. Adventure in the transporter room.

I don't know about that, but "Tiny," the guy who Sulu takes out also appeared in TMP.

6) Here's another one (last one, I promise): When Kirk does the Vulcan hand sign, his pinky and fourth finger are tied together with fishing line (you can see it if you pause it).

How funny! When I was seven years old, I couldn't get my pinky and ring fingers to stay together, so I bandaged them together for like two days. I've been able to do the Vulcan salute effortlessly ever since.

...Of course, the ST4 bridge was less human-friendly than the ST3 one. It still had all its controls labeled in Klingon, which probably wouldn't happen if our heroes had refitted it. On top of that, it was darker and grittier and more cramped than the ST3 bridge, so hardly an improvement.

One could argue that Kruge had two command centers: one for flying the ship (ST4), and one for conducting his espionage operations (ST3). Our heroes had little use for the latter, and they only visited it in ST3 because Maltz was there and they needed to round him up to gain control of the ship. And there wouldn't have been time to go for the navigation bridge after Maltz was captured, as the Genesis planet was exploding, so Scotty and Sulu punched in the necessary commands from the spymaster center...

If the STIV bridge was rebuilt by our crew, then why does every Klingon bridge we ever see after follow it's template instead of the TMP or STIII versions?

Why is it still all in Klingonese?

I've heard the "it's a secondary bridge" argument, but I'm not convinced.

I opened your thread with trepidation, and items 1-5 were old news, but number 6 is news to me. I'll need to check it out. I've seen the movie numerous times (including in the theatre on opening night) and never noticed it.

Default for the computer?

It wasn't rebuilt in-story, any more than Saavik got plastic surgery in-story. They redesigned the set to suit the needs of the film better, and pretended it had looked like that all along. This is what filmed serial fiction does sometimes. It's a work in progress, they improve it as they go, and they expect the audience to be capable of suspending disbelief.

3) What color were the uniforms of the two guys in the spacedock "bridge"? I always assumed they were the standard engineering ones, but with the light, they seemed funky.

.

I always assumed they looked like that because they were bathed in red light. However, there were some of those uniforms made in red (and a few other colors) which weren't seen too much since TMP. It could be one of those. But that's just speculation.

Something I noticed from TVH today.... the scene where they figure out where they decide that they want to time travel is a redress from the set where spock died in star trek II.

The red engineering protective suit was worn by damage control personnel. It was made for TMP but wasn't seen on screen for any major length of time till TWOK, where you can see it being worn by crew in the admirals arrival, back left here:

They were also worn in TVH by the damage control party trying to reinforce the ops center windows before they broke here:

Scracth that -- Gary Faga is the blond guy who says to Sulu, "Don't get smart, Tiny" just before Sulu goes smart on his ass. I WAS RIGHT!!!!

What's your source, please?

If you watch TMP, Gary Faga is the dark-haired Airlock Technician (with a mustache), whom Spock neck-pinches before he goes off to visit V'ger. Then Faga's the security guy taken down by Kirk in ST III, only the mustache is gone. Faga even does the same rolls-eyed fainting performance in both scenes.

Are you telling me he blonded his hair and mustache instead, to play Sulu's nemesis? Nope, that's the other guy, Douglas Alan Shanklin. Blond hair, blond mustache.

Hmm. My roommate is pretty much an expert on all things TOS (as I know you are Therin) so when he told me it was Gary Faga, I figured he was right. Oh well. My mistake.

Wow, muscle memory in only two days. Impressive! ;)

It's a british style swagger stick yes, but also personal computer interface, I'm not sure where I got this from posibly the novelization. It would give Stiles full access to the main computer from anywhere in the ship.

You can't trust these bozo roommates!

Now for fun, who can find the thruster suit puppet from TMP in TSFS?
