Vector images in programs like Corel X3

I'm trying to learn how to make vector images. Does anyone know of any good tutorials? Can I use layers, like Photoshop? If anyone knows of good Corel Draw tutorials I'd really appreciate it!

You mean besides the ones that are part of the program itself? If you bought a legal copy, you have a manual and the "help" function certainly contains some walk-throughs.

A brief web-search also came up with a ton of them. Just search for Coreldraw Tutorial, with or without the X3.

Yes, Corel Draw has layers (I use them a *lot* myself). Aside from the ones Cary mentioned, there's some good tutorials and tips at Ex Astris Scientia on his Technical Support page: http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/techsupport.htm
They aren't specifically for Corel Draw, but they're general enough that you can apply them easily.

First off (joking) I would not use Corel. This is coming from and Adobe user.
I would just use the tutorials of google for tutorials. Once you figure it out Vectors
are really fun.

Yes, I have a legal copy. I got work to put it on my machine (it's not my department so I beg software whenever it's around) Photoshop too. Though I bought SmartDraw myself.

I digress. Anyway I photocopied parts of the manual but it's not really very helpful. Video tutorials are what I really want. I'm thinking of getting Anime Studio Pro and it's vector based animation so what I'm wanting to do is start the vector process now, and import to that program later.

It's strange, but I've been using Corel for like 15 years, and I still don't bother using layers all that much. Can't say why. But they do come in handy occasionally.

My coworker uses both, and he says there's nothing Illustrator or Photoshop can do that Corel can't at this point. And the whole Corel vector/raster graphics suite can be had for $250 as an upgrade. What's the price on those Adobe products these days? ;)

I've used layers, primarily, when I want to do blends, or if I want to keep certain element "protected." CorelDraw works just peachy at doing this stuff. Then again, so does EVERY bitmap or vector 2D rendering package out there, AFAIK, at this point. I also use Adobe Photoshop (don't use Illustrator) and Paint Shop Pro (at work). Both have full layer functionality.

I actually don't care much for Adobe, primarily because it IS so ungodly expensive (and I'm not into pirating software, even if it IS horrifically overpriced like Adobe's stuff). Functionally, I can do everything I've ever wanted to in Paint Shop or Corel, and both work very much the same as Adobe does.

Of course, there's also free software that's nearly as good... get The GIMP for Bitmaps and Inkspace for vector work... both are totally free and can be "linked" together. Before I got them to give me Paint Shop at work, I was using this combo for my image editing and creation for a couple of months. Perfectly serviceable, if a bit less intuitive than something well-refined like Corel.

I've been using Corel for a long time. I use layers mostly to redraw bitmaps or store some bitmaps. I can't say I really use to seperate parts of the image. I do use PowerClip a lot for that though (usually I PowerClip surface details into the surface objects, for example).

I suppose I'm technically in the Corel camp as I use PSP X. Though in my defence I've been using Paint Shop Pro for about twelve years and Corel only recently bought out Jasc.
Still, I've tried using Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator as well as Corel Draw but I have to say, for me, PSP beats them all hands down for in terms of flexibility and usability and other good 'bilities.

I find myself using powerclips in combination with "convert to bitmap" a lot lately. Use the powerclip function to crop a bitmap into a specific-sized box, or place a bitmap in a shape, then hit "convert to bitmap." It cuts the file size down from using powerclips.
