along the lines of 1960s period dramas and 1950s too. now

NBC has bought the period project, from 20th Century Fox TV and studio-based Chernin Entertainment, with a script commitment plus penalty. Daniels is set to write and direct the TV series version, which will be based on the 1967 Valley of the Dolls feature adaptation, as well as executive produce with Chernin and Katherine Pope.

Valley of the Dolls, which has sold more than 30 million copies, spans over two decades to chronicle the lives, career highs and ultimate self-destruction of three female best friends: Anne Welles, who works at a Broadway talent agency; Neely O’Hara, a vaudeville star; and Jennifer North, a showgirl. The title of the book refers to a slang for sleeping pills that the three women eventually become dependent on
.

The novel previously was adapted as a movie in 1967 produced by 20th Century Fox and starring Barbara Parkins, Patty Duke and Sharon Tate; as a mini-series in 1981 produced by 20th Century Fox TV; and as a late-night soap in 1994.

Lee Daniels To Adapt ‘Valley of The Dolls’ Into Series For NBC, Chernin Entertainment

Geez another remake? I never saw the syndicated 1994 TV series which was test-marketed for 13 weeks in selected cities. Can anyone comment on the '94 series?

No, but the novel and 1967 theatrical film were certainly memorable and successful enough that folks keep coming back to the well. People can have any opinions they like about that kind of fiction, but Susann succeeded so well that she changed the fiction bestseller end of the publishing business.

Roger Ebert co-wrote the movie "sequel," BTW, Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls, with director Russ Meyer. For some reason some folks think Ebert should be embarrassed by that; if it were me I'd want it on my fucking tombstone.

Upon its initial release, [Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls] was given an X rating by the MPAA...Meyer's response to the original X rating was to attempt to re-edit the film to insert more nudity and sex, but Fox wanted to get the movie released quickly and wouldn't give him the time.
