Vacuum cleaners

I am going to be buying a new vacuum cleaner in a couple of weeks time. In the past I have only owned cheap vacuum cleaners i.e I have never spent more that about $80 on one. However now I will be able to spend a considerable larger amount. I thought I might by a Dyson (possibly a Dyson DC25) I was wondering if anyone here had one and if so do you think it was worth the money? Or is there another brand you would recommend?

Despite the company’s reputation for questionable, high-pressure sales tactics, Kirby has made rugged, long-lasting, high-quality vacuum cleaners for decades. Don’t know if they’re available in Tasmania, though, or how much they’d cost there.

I can't find a distributor listed for Kirby in Tasmania.

It looks like the brands I am limited to are

Bissell
Dyson
Volta
Rowenta
Nilfisk
Electrolux
Vax
Miele
Kambrook
LG

I have an old Electrolux vacuum cleaner (probably 20 years at least, it was my grandmother's), which I think was very expensive when it was new. Still works great, but the dust bags (or whatever that's called in English) are ridiculously expensive and it's difficult to reuse them often.

In Which? consumer magazine reports, Miele usually come out top followed by Dyson. I have a Dyson 24 Ball upright, which I bought mainly because of its compact size, ease of manoeuvrability, and performance.

I've had a Dyson for about 10 years. Works great, no problems, plus it has the novelty value of seeing the dirt circulating (admittedly, a transient fascination with swirling collected dirt may not be a widespread trait...)

I can't remember the model name (it's purple with bits of green, if that helps... I think they're colour-coded by model) and to be honest, I can't really say it gets weekly use(!) but it's proven to work fine over many years.

I have a Dyson. It's "meh". I've never really had much luck with vacuum cleaners over the years. At least this one has stayed in working order for longer than the others.

I love my Dyson. It actually cleans up after the pets and the kids. I had a Miele years ago and would own another one if I could afford it, but the Dyson is great, though it's heavy and awkward to carry up the stairs.

Miele is fantastic, but very pricey. The only reason we have one is my wife found it on Craigslist for free because the seller thought it was broken (it was just clogged).

Well, we have a Dyson. I forget which model it is, but it's one of the upright ball models. We did a lot of research, but when we got it home, my Mom was frustrated with it for quite some time, as she felt it was overengineered, if that makes any sense. She felt it was cumbersome and difficult to move around.

My Mom later got a Miele canister, which she loves. It's very light. So, now we have two vacuums. One is better for carpet (Dyson), and the other is better for floors (Miele).

Before that, it was an old Electrolux which kicked the bucket. Those things were hefty, but seeing as support for them was dwindling locally, ie the local repair store changing their allegiance to Miele, she didn't feel like getting it repaired anymore. When we did our research, she was considering Electrolux until she realized they're not made the same way anymore.

An aunt of mine has owned a kirby about a long as I've drawn breath.... still works.

I'm also looking at getting a new vacuum. I spent two hours vacuuming this morning- my regular vac didn't seem to be picking much up so I had to switch to a handheld. I've been kind of looking at the Dysons (I've known my vac was on its last legs for some time), but between my hair and the dog's fur, I'm thinking I should get one made specifically for pet hair. And I'm not sure if I like the roller ball in the Dysons- seems like it'd be hard to get under furniture with.

I have a Hettie, My mother got a henry 13 years ago and its still going.
Most cleaning firms I know of use Henry's and Hettie's.

What kind do you want? Small and lightweight? A canister? An upright?

For the small and lightweight, Consumer's Report says the Dust Devil Featherlite is best, at only $50.

For an upright bag vacuum, they went with the Kenmore, at $260.

For an upright bagless vacuum, they went with the Hoover Wind Tunnel, at $130.

My Hoover bag upright is great; we've had it for almost 8 years and it still works fine. The only drawback is the weight; it's too heavy and inflexible for the stairs. Plus, it's lout as all get-out. For small things, I have a Eureka Might-Mite. It's great for the floors, the stairs and hard to reach places, and it has tons of attachments, but it is fairly CRAP on our thick carpet. But it weighs practically NOTHING and costs about 60-something dollars. I've also had that for at least 8 or 9 years and it still works.

I guess it all depends on which feature is most important to you.

My sister, who has three young children, has a Dyson Ball vacuum, and thinks it's the best vacuum in the world. But those run at least $300.

The price doesn't really matter as I am willing to pay a few hundred, if neccessary, for the best vacuum cleaner.

I have three cats so I want one that is good at picking up pet fur.

Would prefer a bagless because I have had trouble finding bags in the past though nowadays that problem is lessened by being able to buy thrm online.

I do not have any stairs so that is not a factor. i do have arthritis which might be a factor. I find that hip pain often makes vacuuming difficult. I am not sure if an upright VC would be an improvement over the barrel VC I have used in the past.

My carpet thin and reasonably easy to clean.

If that's the case, I think an upright might be easier for you. Look into a Dyson, a Bissel or an Electrolux. I think they all have "pet" vacuums.

It's Megamaid...she's gone from suck to blow!

I've got a Bissell designed for homes with pets, it works great.

I have a Bissell, and I love it. It's an upright bagless vacuum, and it weighs next to nothing. And it's purple! I have two cats, and it's good at cleaning up after them. I don't remember the model number, but I got it for about $50 or so brand new a few years ago.
