v-8 family

thought i'd try to do a few romulan v-8 variants the first is the original which i had on my hard drive i added a bit of color to it.

the second is a mauler armed v-8

the romulans seeing thier flagship had power problems decieded to up grade the weaponary with the newly developed mauler technology. which gave more firepower for the energy used. the ships still kept thier cramped quarters but the systems were not as power intensive as a newer cloaking device was installed.
when first encountered by the federation it was quite a shock when the u.s.s hardy, a connstituion class starship encountered what the captain thought was a stock v-8 and engaged accordingly the first shot from the v-8 mauler easiely pentrated the shields and blasted the hardy to a usless hulk. only the arrival of two loknar class frigates stopped the complete destruction of the hardy.
starfleet feared the romulans would use thier new weapon as a means to start a war but cooler heads quickly thought a way to beat the weapon they relised it had a limited field of fire and thus all starship captains were warned about the firing arc of the new weapon which seemed to be only mounted in the bow

yeah sorry i tend to classify the ships as the fasa rpg and combat games do keep forgetting that the classification isnt actually cannon

I didn't realise the Romulans in the FASA game had a kind of mauler cannon, also.

In the Star Fleet Universe, the Roms have a number of mauler-armed ships - such as the Falcon - but they were used for starbase assaults, and made for pretty poor duellists.

dont think they did as far as i'm aware i just got the idea from another board when someone did a mauler armed federation cruiser. i think it was vance though i could be wrong

Just bear in mind that mauler ships are intended to be base-busters - but 'historically' (in the SFU) were only used by the Coalition (Romulans, Klingons, Lyrans) and the Andromedans (who either captured mauler tech from an Alpha power, or had some sort of equivalent they brought with them from the M31 Galaxy).

Have you thought of trying some of the SFU variants of the Eagle series?

FASA Star Trek never had anything like a mauler. The closest thing they had was MAYBE the Romulan V-9 Night Flyer, which was pretty much a Bird Of Prey with two Plasma Torpedo Launchers mounted in the nose...

Think HUGE unwieldy cannon. The kind a ship is built around. No good for shooting at a moving target, but pefect for blowing the crap out of a big thing that can't get away(i.e. a base).

well i couldn't resist so i did a mauler armed version of my warhawk

the war hawk class battle cruiser was one of the heavy sisters to the v-8 and so during the refit of the class the romulan navy decide to rearm a few war hawks to the mauler specification though this was not entirely successful as the power to use the weapon was not much less then any damage it may cause,in fact the weapon was slightly less powerful then the old v-8 bird of prey version. the romulan scientist worked on the idea for years before they gave up, for some reason the mauler was only really effective on the v-8 class though the scientists couldn't agree as to why this should be so

thought i'd do a light cruiser the kestral class
she's 25% smaller then the warhawk

hopefully i'll have a romulan tug and transport pods in a week
