UNITED STATES SHIP RELUCTANT

Reluctant was one of several U.S. Army Freight Vessels turned over to the United States Navy shortly before the end of World War Two. Displacing more than 700 tons fully loaded, she was 176 feet long, with a beam of 32 feet and a draft of 14 feet. Two 500 hp GM Cleveland Division diesel engines drove twin screws to give the ship a max speed of 13 knots. For protection, 50-caliber machine guns were mounted on either side of the flying bridge.

MISTER ROBERTS

The award winning 1955 film based on the play and novel of the same name. Starring Henry Fonda, James Cagney, William Powell and Jack Lemmon, Mister Roberts is the story of a Lieutenant desperate to see action in the waning days of the war but stuck aboard an old cargo ship serving under a tyrannical captain. The Reluctant is portrayed in the film by the USS Hewell.

“We also found an Army private first class...he claims they threw him too.”
