USS Raan conversion finally finished!

Forbin

Finally finished!

This is the Alliance Models conversion kit to make a Belknap-class starship, plus the LN-68-style warp nacelles that are particular to the USS Raan. The design is from Mastercom Datacenter's "Ships of the Star Fleet, Volume 1." The only part from the Ertl model kit is the saucer, and in this case I used one of my rare old "smoothie" saucers from an original 1979 model, because I didn't want to sand off all that damn panel detail.

The 0nly kitbashing I did is to replace the resin engine struts with laminated sheet plastic ones. The nacelles are hollow, but I still don't trust the resin struts to not sag. The rest is pure commercial conversion kit.

I built it with the hangar deck open, and inside are two scale shuttles from Federation Models.

The aztec pattern is a base coat of ModelMaster "Light Gray" detailed with light Flanker Blue, with a final overspray of gray to tone everything down. I used Walker brass templates for the saucer, and a billion bits of Chartpak drafting tape for the rest of the ship.

Phaser balls are birdshot!

Decals are 100% JTGraphics. You'll probably notice the lack of the red pinstripes on the B/C deck superstructure. I have never succeeded in getting those thin things on right, and this was no exception. The heck with it!!

That era of Starfleet vessels is certainly my favourite.

Constitution refit, Constellation, Oberth, Miranda, Excelsior era.

Someone talented enough with models should do a Daedalus type vessel in that style.

Great work! Love the paint job and detailing.

Bet you needed a heating pad for your neck after hunching over that masterpiece!

Great macro photography as well.

Maybe it's just me, but I prefer the aesthetics of the LN-68s over the TMP refit-E nacelles.

And yes, I will say it: it would be really cool to see a TOS version of this ship class. What kind of ship was it?

Awesome job, but I kind of agree about the design.

I like the idea of the nacelle pylons being attached to the bottom, but I think it makes the ship seems unbalanced. I'd like it more if the saucer was lower, perhaps where the torpedo launchers are.

Mercy that's beautiful...the detail work and paint work are first rate.
Wow.
Your making me want to get back into models...but...they won't ever look like this! (Which is why I don't).:)

I kinda like the low-slung angled struts. Looks very agressive from the side.

great work.

Beautiful work, as always, John.

One of these days I need to finish mine - that's only been in need of finishing since 2004 or therabouts....

That I can dig, but you could always buy a later ERTL kit, and then putty and then sand, that way you arent taking too much of the plastic off.

Oh other than that, I wish I had a 10th of your talent.

Wow! Have to say this turned out great! I always loved this design since I first saw the posters. So, are you going to do the NX version from the poster that had a mix of TOS and TMP parts?

Forbin - Another fine job. You keep this up and we will be able to expect a 2010 calendar to follow up on the 2007 and 2009 calendars!

Fine job.:techman:
