USS Hornet (CV-8) Has Been Found

Ar-Pharazon

Story Story

The ship was located by the late Paul Allen's Vulcan Company. Even leaving out being a co-founder of Microsft, this guy left a hell of a legacy with this and other epic finds.

The Hornet rests 17,500 feet down in the south Pacific with (either) 111 or 140 sailors who went down with their ship.

I never knew the location of the Hornet was unknown. Shows how much I paid attention...

It's an amazing find.

After WWII, there's probably a literal shitload of ships we don't know the exact location of. Plus the possibility of one being 17,000+ feet down.

Part of the problem with finding a sunken ship is that records of where that ship was sunk can be incorrect. Sometimes the ship will drift quite some distance while sinking - particularly if it's really deep water.

Another issue is - exactly what condition was that ship in when it sank? Yamato was broken VERY badly when she rolled over and sank (magazine explosion) and therefore in several pieces. Bismarck stayed together better but, her main gun turrets separated.

Hornet seems to have settled quite neatly and pretty much upright. She almost looks like you could bring her up and sail her home! (Except for all of the holes - and the 3 1/2 miles of water over her and...)

Sadly, she only had a lifespan of just over a year.
